Cowley Soccer Teams Win

Both Cowley College soccer teams rolled to easy wins Monday. See the jump for the stories from Cowley.

Women’s soccer blasts Independence 11-0
By RAMA PEROO, Cowley College
Getting goals from seven players, the Cowley College women’s soccer team routed Independence Community College 11-0 Saturday in its conference opener played in Arkansas City.
The victory improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
“We accomplished a lot of the things that we set out to do,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said. “There are always things we need to improve on, but overall I was really pleased.”
It did not take Cowley long to get the scoring started as freshman Dakota Osborne scored the first of her three goals just 2:26 into the contest. Fellow freshman Bailey Martinson added two goals in the game’s first 10 minutes of play, while Carol Rodrigues’ second goal of the season put the Lady Tigers ahead 4-0, 11:28 into the game.
Emily Tanner, who played goalie in the second half of the contest, added two first half goals as Cowley led 6-0 at the end of the first half.
With Independence having only 12 players on its roster, the Lady Tigers kept the pressure on in the second half. Osborne tallied two second half goals, while Teryn Engels netted her first goal of the season. Sadie Hull scored her second goal of the season and Aline Tamiosso added a goal and three assists. Tamiosso now has six goals in three games.
“Aline just missed on some goals but was able to get everyone else involved,” Straight said.
Cowley out-shot Independence 23-0 as the Lady Pirates fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk East.
The Lady Tigers will now turn its attention to Thursday’s game at Barton County at 2 p.m. The Cougars are 3-1 on the season.
“This is going to be a wake up call for us to see what our conference is really like,” Straight said. “I think it can be a good match if we come in with the right mindset and focus on the things we have been working on.”

Tiger soccer team opens conference play with 4-1 win

The Cowley College men’s soccer team jumped out to an early lead against the Independence Pirates Saturday in Arkansas City and then held on for a 4-1 win in the conference opener for both teams.
The Tigers’ Nathan Modesto scored just 59 seconds into the contest, giving Cowley the early 1-0 lead. Lucas Coelho then took advantage of a free kick from just outside the box as he looped a shot over the wall of defenders and just over the outstretched arms of the Pirate goalkeeper, Wayne King, to increase Cowley’s lead to 2-0 with just over six minutes gone by.
This was the second time this season that Coelho has scored off a free kick, and the fourth goal in three games for the talented sophomore.
“His ability to score off a set piece on a deal ball has been crucial for us,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said.
The Pirates would pull within 2-1 on Jose Rios’ goal with 35:11 left in the first half. The score would stay 2-1 until Tiger sophomore Walisson Gomes’ goal 11:32 into the second half. Gomes would put the finishing touches on the victory by adding a second goal with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Dos Santos was happy to see Gomes record his first two goals of the season.
“He has been a solid player up front and has worked hard on and off the ball,” Dos Santos said. “He has been a vital player for us.”
The victory improves Cowley’s record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, while Independence falls to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
“It was good to win our opening conference game at home,” Dos Santos said. “A win is always a morale boost, but there is still work to be done.”
Cowley will face a much stiffer test when they play at No. 10-ranked Barton County Thursday at 4 p.m. The Cougars are a much better team than its 1-3-1 record would indicate.
“Barton is a strong team, we have got to prepare ourselves and have confidence going into the match,” Dos Santos said.
