Cowley volleyball knocks off No. 1-ranked Parkland, goes 4-0 at tourney
In a battle of the current No. 1-ranked NJCAA Division II volleyball team (Parkland College) versus the previous No. 1-ranked volleyball team (Cowley College), the Lady Tigers avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Cobras with a dominating 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 win Saturday at the Kirkwood Tournament in Cedar Rapids, IA.
In just its second match of the season, Cowley lost to Parkland in five games. However, the Lady Tigers showed they have improved dramatically since that earlier loss.
“We felt we beat ourselves more than they beat us in that first meeting,” Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. “This time we came out strong and kept the momentum on our side for three straight matches.”
Cowley did not stop with the win over Parkland as the Lady Tigers also knocked off No. 16-ranked Iowa Lakes 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 on Saturday. Cowley opened the tournament on Friday with straight set wins over Southwestern Iowa (25-11, 25-10, 25-20) and Des Moines Area Community College (25-21, 25-21, 25-15).
Last year, Cowley went just 2-2 at the Kirkwood Tournament and was forced to play 20 games in the four matches. The Lady Tigers needed to play only 13 games in going 4-0 at this year’s tourney.
“That shows how strong this team can be,” Bahner said.
After losing its first two matches of the season, Cowley has rattled off nine straight wins. The No. 9-ranked Lady Tigers are now 9-2 on the season.
Cowley got great balance from its hitters at the Kirkwood Tournament as sophomores Roslandy Acosta and Lindsey Chandler finished with 33 and 32 kills, respectively.
“Lindsey has improved so much and is showing how valuable she is to the team,” Bahner said.
Freshmen Emily Barto and Danika Maggard also had big weekends as Barto had 29 kills and Maggard added 24 kills.
“It is great to see them continue to improve and make contributions offensively,” Bahner said.
Fellow freshmen Molley Scanlon led the team with 61 assists in the four matches, while sophomore Meghan Cahill added six blocks.
Cowley will look to make it 10 wins in a row when they host Labette Community College tonight at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Cardinals are 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East.
