Just one more post about football today.
Every Monday Big-12 coaches have a teleconference call. I sat in yesterday and wrote a couple stories about their comments. Nothing real earth shaking, but there were some interesting insights into what they are thinking as the season begins.
Here is the link to the sports blog.
I hope to post my own stories there, as well as stories from around the Big-12 and the SEC to some extent. There are a lot of really cool sports blogs out there so it will be a center for blogs.
Arkansas City will not be the focus now, but we can still talk about the town. For now the blog is a blog in search of an identity. Considering what the new niche will be.

Arkansas City football time
The Arkansas City Bulldogs start their season Friday at Valley Center. It is going to be a few weeks before the new stadium hosts a game.
It is a bit odd, but the Bulldogs will play Winfield (at Winfield) in the second game of the season on Sept. 10. Gonna be strange not having that game during Arkalalah week.
The first varsity game at the new stadium will be Sept. 17 when the Bulldogs host Goddard.
I have found a couple of good links for following the Bulldogs. Catch it Kansas has a good preview of the upcoming season, and scores and stats will be updated there regularly. Here is the link.
The other place is Hovpen Sports, which is a really good high school sports website
So there is time for the loose ends to be tied up at the new stadium. I noticed there is no press box, but that is probably one of the loose ends that will be fixed.
Now, before the naysayers get rolling, there are just five varsity games scheduled at the new stadium, but there will be a lot more than that going on there. There is JV football, and whatever other football teams the Bulldogs have.
Soccer will likely be played there as well. Then there will be track and field. Im sure the field will get a lot more use than just five games.
Im not sure what the policy will be on allowing other public events .. outdoor concerts or whatever, but hopefully there will be some of that.
A few commented about the cost and such when I posted the snake dance photos.
Yea it cost a lot. But how long has it been since they got a new stadium. Ive no idea the history of Curry Field, but it has been many years.
There were major parking problems at Curry Field, not so at the new stadium. Plenty of parking available, modern restrooms.
I think it is good for the town to have a new stadium. It can be a point of civic pride. There are some good things happening in Ark City whether the naysayers admit it or not. And during a recession or depression IS a good time to build because costs go down. It is tax money well spent.
I have visited many high school football stadiums in my years of covering high school sports for newspapers.
Often that has been what shaped my opinion of a town and was the only real information I had about the town. People who come to games from out of town do that as well. Issues like parking matter. Also just the general aesthetics and intuitive nature of the facility matters. Is the stadium easy to find? You may not find it just by driving into Ark City, but at least having it at the high school is more user friendly from that viewpoint. Is it obvious where to park once you find it, or is it obvious where to go to enter once you find it?
Just how a stadium feels is important too. A new stadium has a nice feel.
It also has a tremendous impact on the athletes. Would not surprise me to see more kids come out for football and for the team to improve a bit just because of their surroundings.
Having said that. I have always enjoyed Southwestern College's football stadium in Winfield. It violates everything I just wrote, but it just has that really nice feel to it that makes up for it being hard to find and not having real good parking. The Aesthetics and design are great. I also like the stadium at Wellington for the same reasons. I dont dislike Curry Field but it is time to move on.

New Bulldog Stadium
Here are a couple pictures from the Snake Dance Friday evening at the Arkansas City High School. This is the preseason ritual held each year as school starts. They had food and then the football team had a scrimmage. After the scrimmage people were able to walk out on the new field.
This was all held at the new stadium.
It does look very nice. They dont have the pressbox up yet and there are a few things here and there to be finished, but it still looks good.
One big difference you will see at football games this year is the parking. The new stadium has a big parking lot, so that will make it a lot easier.
Lighting will be better. Modern bathrooms and a nice entry way. The field itself looked sharp with lines painted and theres a bulldog logo at midfield.
Your tax dollars at work.

Cause of financial woes
Here is a long and complicated story, but it exposes more criminal bank activity that caused billions in profits, all paid for and subsidized with our tax dollars. Corporate welfare so that bankers could illegally get billions in profits and then get a federal bailout to cover it up. These people should be in jail, not getting 100 million dollar bonuses..
Here is the longer version ...
Here is a shorter version for those of you in a hurry :)
And some people worry about some bum getting $100 a week in welfare to buy drugs.
How about drug tests for bankers eh.

Vaccinations for your animals?
Here is something I received from the AC Police Dept. Is this a problem in Ark City?
Rabies Vaccinations for Dogs and Cats
Rabies Vaccinations for Dogs and Cats
The Arkansas City Police Department has found that citizens have been getting some confusing information about rabies vaccinations for pets within the city limits. It is our hopes that this press release can clear up some of that confusion.

More on Chilean Miners
Im fascinated by this Chile Miners story. Here is the latest. Sounds like they had a good team spirit down there. The story also said that Chile has about the best mining technology there is... Just made me wonder what other countries are "among the best:" at ..

Miss Mexico is Miss Universe
This is for all those anti-Mexicans. I just thought it was too ironic to pass up. In Nevada,, a Mexican wins the Miss Universe title...Here is the link to Miss Universe
Kinda strange to have no comments today. Readership is not particularly down, so ... not sure what that means. Maybe there just wasnt anything controversial.
Maybe Miss Mexico as Miss universe will get some people going.

Former Cowley athlete injured
Former Cowley College volleyball player Renee Breckenridge was in a serious car accident over the weekend and has some pretty major injuries. According to her facebook page, she is in good spirits and expecting a full recovery. She has a broken pelvis, and is in a Wichita hospital. Lives in Wichita and is either a student at Newman College or a recent grad.
Today in Arkansas City
Maybe Ill start calling my local updates that -- Today in Arkansas City.
I know I have been too much into national news, and sports, lately. But sports IS important news. To me its really much more interesting than national politics. I actually do want to know how the new KU coach will do and who their quarterback will be. :)
***
Did you go to the Ren festival in Ark City over the weekend? I only went for a very short time. But it seemed like it was well attended and there was a lot going on. We really do have some interesting things going on from time to time here. One thought. I was reading somewhere that daily admission to the Ren Festival in Chicago is $50. Here it was $10.
Say what you like about Ark City, but I will take small town America over huge metropolis any day.
There are a lot of festivals and such coming up. The Car Show, a Barbeque festival labor day weekend (was in Winfield last two years) .. the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield. .
There is a slight possibility that we will have our music festival again.
Anyways, would like to hear how you liked the festival..
***
I do need some help with the blog and or the site. Im really thinking at this point that I will move everything over here to the blog. But that could change.
I need people to submit material. and even do some writing if you would like. No anonymous writing unless I know who you are and we negotiate that. Cant pay anyone though. So you would have to do it for the good of Ark City, and that is why this blog is here..
I am having to actually make a living, and I am, but that means I dont have much time to put into this anymore.
I am freelancing a lot these days. I am slowly becoming an outdoors writer .. hunting fishing, camping etc., so Im learning as I go.
***
I should be able to post more local stuff on here in the coming days.

Miners in Chile
Have you all been keeping up with the trapped miners in Chile? They have been trapped after a cave-in for 17 days and are 2,300 feet underground. They are all alive and communicating with people on the surface. Government and mining officials say it will take four months to get them out, but they can send supplies down, so Chilean officials are expecting to get them all out.
I just think its a pretty amazing story.
Here are a couple links to stories

KU coach names starting quarterback
Kansas coach Turner Gill named Kale Pick his starter today after practice. See the full story here on the sports blog.
One for the Obama haters
Here is an article I stumbled across while researching for a story I am writing (my actual job these days).
About the oil spill and how it was overhyped by the media, and about the president's recent visit to the gulf to show us all that everything is ok now - after he and the media told us how bad it was.
Anti-Obama people will love it. its a good read.

dangerous topic
Did you all see the story about the republican person who put together a video about republican women versus democrat women (referring to women politicians) ?
Here is a link to the story about it. I did not see the video. It is gone i think. If anyone has a link, send it in.
Just posting this for discussion.
Some were saying this is sexist humor. That women should not be judged on looks but on brains and accomplishments. Does that mean we no longer should notice? Do women notice whether a male politician is good looking or not? I think there is a huge difference between noticing and making it the only thing that matters.

Attitudes
A poster on another thread brought to my attention a poll in a local newspaper. The poll shows 79 percent think Arkansas City is inferior to other towns. It should be noted that this is 154 votes.
Last week the guy from Municipal Solutions - the audit company - gave results of their survey. They sent out surveys in the water bills, and people were invited to send them back. They got 161 back, and half of those said the city either meets or exceeds their expectations.
The two surveys do ask different questions, but they do show different results.
One survey says people have a positive attitude and one says they have a negative attitude. Of course, 150 or so is not really representative of 12,000 people.
I would agree that Ark City has more than its share of negative people. I call them naysayers, and they will be negative no matter what.
Remember the doom and gloom about the hospital. Its more than 1 million under budget and going to be done a month or two early. Im sure they will still find negativity.
Remember the traffic circle on the Bypass and Kansas Ave. ? and how it was going to result in hundreds of wrecks, deaths, mayhem and general bad things? Just how many wrecks have we had? One i think? i dont have official stats, but I would bet there are fewer now than there were before the thing was put in. .
As I have said before, people need to get out more. I dont think AC is better or worse than most towns. A town is not good or bad in itself .. it is what you make it.
I have to tell you all about the town of Crossett Arkansas. No worse or more godforsaken place on the planet in my estimation. Its in LA, lower arkansas, near Louisiana. Nasty hot in summer and extremely humid, cold and cloudy in winter but no snow. This used to be a company town that produced paper and grew those fast growing pine trees. It still is a paper mill town. Huge paper mill on one side of the tracks, town on the other. Stinks awful all the time, some days worse than others, but ... oh my goodness.
Smells like rotten eggs all the time.
For miles - probably 50 miles -in all directions there is nothing but rows of pine trees. Not even real forest, just rows of planned pine trees.
The only good thing is a small park with a decent trail through the woods, but it is by a stagnant lake - big pond - and mosquitos will eat you alive in the summer, so its not usable 6 months out of the year.
There are no cool looking old buildings. It was started as a company town in 1900 or so, and just has wooden structures. Anything that might have been historic was torn down.
Its also a dry county. You have to drive 20 miles into louisiana to get alcohol. and thats a two lane road that makes the road by the casinos here look like an interstate. About once a week there was a major accident with fatalities or serious injuries on that road with people drinking on their way back..
It had about 8,000 people in the early 80s. The mill was the only employer of substance..
People were not friendly either. I lived there 2 years and was always an outsider...
Ok, the thing is though, the people that live there, who grew up there, LOVE their town. They think it is great. They dont even mind the smell.
One interesting fact. Coaching Legend Barry Switzer was born and raised there .. I dont remember, it was his uncle or cousin or something, that was municipal judge when i was there. Thats about the only good thing I could say about it, one interesting fact ... thats it. and he doesnt even go there anymore.
So, I come to Ark City. Historic old west town. Not so terribly hot in summer (usually) and not that humid. Has four seasons. Some snow but winter is tolerable..
Some interesting looking old historic buildings and homes. Nice looking brick streets. Somewhat active downtown. A lot of great trails to hike on. Interesting looking countryside. Rivers to explore. Sort of close to larger cities - wichita, stillwater, oklahoma city, -
Has some good things going on...
Yet people are negative toward it ....

Headlines
Looking at the news this morning, I was shocked a bit - probably should not have been - at the vastly different take on this story. The story is about national ACT scores, which allegedly measure a person's readiness for college. I say they measure a person's ability to take a form test and nothing else, but thats a topic for another day.
Anyways, three headlines on the story are below.
the information is not different in the stories but you can see how they are played differently. These are mainstream media, allegedly objective media.

Cowley volleyball team starts year at No. 1
The Cowley College volleyball team was recently picked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II national pre-season poll. The team returns seven of its players from last year's team that finished No. 2 in the nation.
The Lady Tigers were picked ahead of second-ranked Illinois Central College, the team that Cowley faced in last year’s national title match.
“This is a great honor for our program and the Cowley athletic department as a whole,” Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. “The volleyball program’s success from past years is obviously a big contributor of this, along with the new kids we have brought in.”

Cowley volleyball preview, more sports
Here is a preview of Cowley volleyball, and there are mens and womens cross country below that
Cowley volleyball team eager to make another run at national title
Finishing one win away from the program’s first ever national championship, the Cowley College volleyball team returns a squad hungry to earn another shot at the title.
The Lady Tigers return seven players from last season’s team, which finished the season with a record of 32-5 and had the highest winning percentage (86.5%) in the program’s history.
Head coach Jenifer Bahner had a first season to remember as she helped guide Cowley to conference and region titles, a 19-match win streak, and the runner-up national finish. For her efforts, she was named the District M Coach of the Year.
However, Bahner knows this is a new year and nothing will be handed to the Lady Tigers.

Just a question. Is anyone having trouble posting comments. Seems that it is sending messages that posts failed or something, but apparently they do show up anyway. Must be a Google thing.

The football blog
Ive added updates to the football blog. Oklahoma State and Kansas held scrimmages last night, so I have stories about that. Here is the link http://big12voices.blogspot.com/http://big12voices.blogspot.com/
I am trying to get a blog started on the Big-12, and College Football in general. I hope to have material from all Big-12 schools in one place, so you can see the latest from all of them at once. Not there yet, but working on it.
I do have an ulterior motive here. I am writing some college football stories for a website, and my stories will be there as well, so that is my own personal interest in this.

Rambling religious thoughts
This is pretty much a post I put on another thread. Im just thinking about things and considering what to do.
It just seems like every time I mention anything remotely related to religion, we get the long posts about how the bible is full of mistakes, about God killing people and how stupid Christians are and how they don't think at all .. yada yada yada...
On one hand, its fine for them to do that. but on the other, it does hijack the thread and we cant talk about what we were talking about ... Say you're talking about Ford transmissions, and you get spammed with why Fords are terrible cars and probably don't really exist .. what point does that serve?
The other problem i have is that it is always the same arguments, word for word. Ive just seen em so much i got it memorized. I fully expect to see the list of 100 contradictions posted any time now ... all out of context stuff..And who is to say that the poster didn't just accept what he was told without thinking? How intellectually honest is he or she being? Easy to make wide sweeping accusations...
Anyways. here are some basic points to consider
The problem is not one of accuracy of the bible ... It really does not matter, that is not the objection. The real objection is that there is a God and everyone will face judgment ...
The only bible verse that has to be accurate is John 3:16 ... the rest is commentary.

City Commission Worksession
City Commission will start its worksession early today, at 4 p.m. They will be talking with the company that did the recent audit about specific things the city can do to save money.
The normal worksession will be held after that. Again, I hope to have the live blog going.
Looks like the Bike Path might finally become a reality, A supplemental agreement for engineering is on the agenda for Tuesday and that will be talked about tonight. The material given with the agenda says this is the fianl step before contracts are let. Some of the federal money to stimulate the economy is available for the project, which means the city's share of the cost should go down. No idea how much at this point, but City Manager Steve Archer says the city's share will be reduced "significantly."
This has been in the works for years. It will be good for the city on many levels. Hope it finally gets done this time.
Items on the agenda:

Items on the agenda:
- Appeal of Bruce Pendley, Landrush Leather, to the state historical preservation office regarding his sign. This is where Bryants used to be.
- Uniform Public Offense code. This is passed each year to bring city ordinances in line with state ordinances.
- Standard Traffic Ordinance .. Same thing
- Floodplain Management Ordinance, Again pretty much a formality to be in line with state and federal rules.
- Consider transferring land from the city land bank to Habitat for Humantiy, at 912 North D.
- Construction and maintenance agreement between the city, KDOT and BNFS Railroad.
- Asking the state legislature to consider changing the deadline for municipalities to report tax information to the county clerk
- Bike Path agreement.
More Media Hypocrisy
A N.H. Democratic candidate for state legislature said he wished Sarah Palin had been on the plane that crashed and killed the Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens.
This is bad. But what is worse to me is yet another case of blatant media bias and hypocrisy.
I have not found hardly any "respectable" media sources reporting on this.
New York Daily News has a report.
Some blogs are reporting it, and here is an example. and here is another one.
Can you imagine the media storm we would be having if she had said the same about some democrat?
(Saying that about the president would be illegal, so im thinking of some other politician)

Cowley board lowers tax rate, a little
Meant to post this yesterday. Got busy and forgot. Cowley board passed its budget with a small DEcrease in its mil levy. This means slightly lower taxes for property owners. Probably only a few dollars, but at least its something.
Board approves 2010-2011 budget that includes fewer tax dollars
Cowley’s Board of Trustees delivered some good news to local taxpayers Monday night at its regular monthly meeting.
The Board unanimously approved the 2010-2011 budget for the college that is seeking fewer tax dollars than the previous year. Therefore, the projected mill levy of 19.998 is down from the 2009-2010 levy of 20.226. The final mill levy won’t be set until the final valuation for Cowley County is calculated.
“I am tickled with us being able to lower the mill levy,” Board of Trustees Chairman Albert Bacastow, Jr. said.
The college’s budget approved Monday night is based on in-state enrollments of 73,900 credit hours, a state operating grant of $6,488,117, and a county valuation of $211,418,414, which is a little more than $2 million less than last year.
The college’s total budget for 2010-2011 is $29,484,374 million. It is seeking $4,227,987 in tax support. The college sought $4,257,072 in tax support in 2008-2009, and $4,275,040 in 2009-2010.
Column on religion and politics
Here is a link to a Leonard Pitts column about religion and politics. It ran recently in "a local newspaper" but I liked it anyway.
Here is the link
Here are a couple paragraphs.
Organized religion, Christianity in particular, is on the decline, and it has no one to blame but itself: It traded moral authority for political power.
To put that another way: The Christian Bible contains numerous exhortations to serve those who are wretched and poor, to anger slowly and forgive promptly, to walk through this life in humility and faith. The word ``Republican'' does not appear in the book. Not once.
Yet somehow in the last 30 years, people of faith were hustled and hoodwinked into regarding the GOP platform as a lost gospel.

Skies over Arkansas City
Here is something sent to me, thought I would pass it along. Big meteor showers coming up this week. Stay up real late, or get up real early - depending on your point of view - to watch them around Arkansas City.
And when we say August 12 or 13, we mean the morning hours after midnight … not that night. These typically fast and bright meteors radiate from a point in the constellation Perseus the Hero. But you don’t need to know Perseus to watch the shower. The meteors appear in all parts of the sky. The Perseids are considered by many people to be the year’s best shower, and often peak at 50 or more meteors per hour. 2010 is a great year for the Perseids. This year, the slender waxing crescent moon will set at early evening, leaving a dark sky for this year’s Perseid show. The Perseids tend to strengthen in number as late night deepens into midnight, and typically produce the most meteors in the wee hours before dawn. These meteors are often bright and frequently leave persistent trains. On the mornings of August 12 and 13, watch the Perseid meteors streak across this short summer night from midnight until dawn. Lie back and watch meteors until dawn’s light washes the stars and planets from the sky. The morning of August 11 should be good, too – in fact, this shower tends to rise gradually to a peak for about a week. Then it’s known to drop off rapidly after the peak mornings.
If you go out to watch do not forget bug spray!!! We get ate up if we are not covered head to toe!!!

Football blog updates
I just posted quotes from Oklahoma State and Kansas media days. I hope to get more media day material from around the Big 12. The media days are usually held on the first day, or one of the first few days, of fall camp before the season starts. The first ones were held last Friday and I suppose by tomorrow they will all be done.
Everyone is unbeaten right now and has high hopes. Im looking forward to the season and to writing more about sports. Check out the sports blog here:

Judge's ruling on gay marriage vote
Here is an opinion piece from CNN on the recent judge's ruling overthrowing a California election that defined marriage. Here is the link to the story.
I am not so much concerned about gay marriage, to me that isnt the real issue. The larger issue is that a legal election has been thrown out. If a judge can do that, we no longer have a democracy.
The judge ruled that the vote unfairly discriminated against gay people by not letting them get married.
The judge is also openly gay. Can you say conflict of interest?
Even on that point alone his ruling should be thrown out.
It probably will get to the supreme court eventually.
But it is disturbing that a judge can throw out an election.
