Cowley Volleyball Cruises

Cowley volleyball opens home slate in impressive fashion

Entering the season with a 16-match home winning streak, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team picked up where it left off as they blasted Northern Oklahoma College-Enid 25-15, 25-6, 25-7 Thursday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
After a 25-15 win of game one, the Lady Tigers showed why they are the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division II in games two and three.

With Cowley leading game two by a score of 7-4, sophomore Elena Berroteran took over. The 5-foot-5 Berroteran used her powerful jump serve to key a 13-0 run, which put Cowley on top 20-4. Cowley would finish the game by scoring 18 of the final 20 points.
Berroteran finished with a match-high six aces and nine digs.
“We worked a lot on our serving in practice and being able to take the other team out of their offense,” Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. “We served tough and were really aggressive.”
The Lady Tigers continued to dominate in game three as they raced out to a 6-0 lead and scored 13 of the game’s first 15 points. Sophomore rightside hitter Roslandy Acosta scored several points in game three and finished with a team-high nine kills.
Sophomore Lindsey Chandler joined freshmen Danika Maggard and Emily Barto with five kills apiece. Freshman setter Molley Scanlon returned to the lineup after missing the previous match due to illness, and finished with a team-high 18 assists.
“We had a little bit of everyone contribute to the win,” Bahner said. “I feel like no matter who we have on the court, they can contribute and help make the team better.”
Cowley has won four straight matches after starting the season 0-2. The Lady Tigers benefited from a large home crowd as they extended its home winning streak to 17 matches in a row.
“We had a great crowd and a really loud student section,” Bahner said. “Our girls feed off that energy.”
The Lady Tigers will have some time off before their next match at Neosho County Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Panthers are 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
“We know we are going to get the teams in our conference’s best shot, so we have got to be ready to compete,” Bahner said.
