State of the site

City Commission worksession is today at 5:30 p.m. I hope to have a live blog going, so tune in if you can.
There has not been as much on here lately. For one thing Ive been gone, and for another, I dont have as much time to work on it. I am writing a lot for some internet companies now, actually making some money, so I have had to cut back some on the site.

I am curious about people's reading habits. Do you read both this and the website? Some people call this the website, but there is a separate thing called the website. I am getting the impression that a lot of people read one or the other. dont know if that is right nor not. They have a lot of the same material, but there is more opinion here.

Shop online to support the site

I have a lot of affiliate ads I can put on here, and on the site, which wont result in popups. They are links to various products and stores .. such as best buy, shoes for less and so forth. If you click on the ad, it takes to their site. If you buy something I will get a commission.
You can also get a discount by going through the ads here.
I have access to thousands of those. So far I have guessed at what people might like to see. If I knew what types of produces or brands you want to see, I could probably get them and post them.
What products do you, or would you, shop for online?
If you are concerned about security while shopping online, I would recommend getting a free paypal (www.paypal.com) account. That is very secure and easy to use.
So let me know what ads you want to see ..

Cops, other stuff

Posted on the site a story about three incidents at the Walnut Street bridge. Juveniles involved in fighting. School is out looks like.

Dont forget the meeting tonight with KDOT about Amtrak. Could be interesting. They do want your comments. I posted the material they will be using on the web site.

Is anyone interested in trying a citywide party again next month. We had a few people, but not many, at the last one. Just need to know what people are thinking about that.

Amtrak returning?

The possibility of bringing rail service back to Arkansas City has been talked about for years. It is still a long way off, if it were to happen, but the wheels are in motion.
Kansas DOT officials met with city commissions of Arkansas City and winfield, as well as county commissioners, last Thursday to go over the possibilities.
There will be another meeting Tuesday. The same information will be shared and people may comment. The meeting will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Best Western hotel in Arkansas City on Tuesday.
I have posted the material from KS DOT on the web site www.arkcityrevived.com

Blight

The city passed the redevelopment district Tuesday night by a 3-2 vote. This creates the possibility of a special development district. Any project will still have to be approved by the commission.
Patrick McDonald, Jay Warren and Jean Snell voted for it, while Mell Kuhn and Dotty Smith voted against it.
This does not create a TIF district, but now the city could vote on one if it were to be presented. Other kinds of financing could also be done here.
I think this is a better way to go about it. This way a project can be evaluated on its own merits.
Some object to the "blight" status. It is a stretch but it does meet the legal requirements.

National Day of Prayer

The National day of prayer will be held in Arkansas City at noon, Thursday, at Wilson Park.
They will have pork burgers for lunch.
The lunch is free, but donations will be appreciated.
Its being put on by the ministerial alliance.

Im off on my trip. Wednesday night I am in Dexter Missouri. Its almost at the eastern end of the state. Not far from Kentucky. I didnt manage to get away from Ark City until noon.
Ill probably take my time Thursday, and wander around in Kentucky some. Didnt want to through Nashville with all the flooding.

City commission meeting

I did the live blog last night at the city commission meeting. Here are some highlights.
The city "took no action" on Prairiefests request to have wine at Paris Park during their festival which is the first week in June. That means by default, the request was denied. They can still have it, but they have to do it in the agri-business building - where no permit from the city is needed.
Prairiefest folks say they were wanting to do something different. The festival has struggled in recent years. Commissioners are opposed to approving of alcohol in parks at events. Patrick McDonald said when the city gave the OK for Arkalalah, the commission assured the public that it would not mean alcohol would spread to the parks, and he wanted to keep that promise.
Jean Snell didn't vote on the matter because of his family connections to the festival.
Mell Kuhn said he liked the idea, but felt he had to oppose it because of concern about it spreading to the parks. Dotty Smith was opposed from the beginning, and felt the agri business building was a good alternative.
No word on what Prairiefest folks will do, but they can have it at the Agri business building.
Would having alcohol available make you want to go to PrairieFest?
Why do you like the festival, or why do you not like it?

The city also tabled a measure to declare an area north of Skyline a blighted area, which would be a step toward creating an economic development disrict. City Attorney Tamara Niles had a power point presentation, but commissioners objected to the fact that no paper copies were made available to them.
The vote was 3-1, with Jay Warren not voting. he did not give a reason. Snell voted for it. Kuhn, Smith and McDonald voted for tabling the measure for more study.

Are there any activities planned for Thursday's Day of Prayer?
Ive not heard of any.

6 p.m. ????
Lets start a new string with this

who will make sure we have paris park? Just need to make sure electrcity is on i guess is all?
maybe the first one just bring food and hang out?

Meetings and other topics

There are a few items I want to mention this morning.
I will be doing a live blog tonight at the city commission meeting. One item will be allowing wine at Paris Park for PrairieFest. I am not sure anyone cares about this. It does seem that more people are wanting alcohol at public events. Of course, we still bust Cowley students for drinking......
But I think what will happen, is that they will move that part into the Agri Business building. If they do that, they do not have to get a permit, and the city does not have to get involved.
This is part of trying to get PrairieFest more popular. They moved it downtown last year, and it was just too hot. I still think thats a good idea in principle, but you cant control the weather.
Anyone want to talk about PrairieFest? Do you like it? Why or why not?

I have been busy with freelance projects and have not posted as much lately. Its going to get worse. I am headed out of town for awhile. At least a week, maybe more. Headed to Tennessee. With all the flooding, I will have to go a different way.

My last topic of the morning:
Someone posted yesterday about having a monthly picnic in the summer. People could bring food and have games and such. I added that you could have bands too. This is a really good idea. You could also have speakers .. maybe a commissioner or school board member - or maybe a civic club representative who could talk a bit about their group.
I hope someone will take on that project. I do not have the energy to head up something - which is why there is no music festival cooking.  I would help someone if they will take the lead on it.
