Holidays

Im out of town again, in Tennessee. Ill try to post some while I am here.
I wont be able to make the commission meeting next Tuesday, but Ill get back in the saddle soon after that.
I took the interstate, which is more straight, faster and boring..
but sometimes a boring trip is a good trip.

Heard that the city will be considering a permit to allow a pig statue? in front of the wb meats store in town.
Seems like it would fit the buisness.
Be interesting to see what you all think about that.

City

Looks like  I picked a bad time to miss a meeting Tuesday night. Had something come up, was unavoidable.
But Ill try to get back in the saddle for the next one.
There are some strange things going on right now around town hall. The chief of administration, Lane Massey, has resigned. Lots of people have quit and there are rumors of others doing so as well.
And the commission wants a new direction with a new city manager.
There does seem to be some discontent in all circles.
Thus the need for more focused leadership.
The commission should be setting policy and not be involved in day to day matters at all.
at least thats my take on it.
Is anyone getting ready to run for commission?????

Eclipse

Tonight will be a total eclipse of the moon, or in the very early morning hours of tomorrow, depending on how you look at it. Supposed to start about 1 a.m. and last past 3 a.m.
Weather should cooperate. Some light clouds and not as cold as it has been lately.
An interesting aspect is, that tomorrow is also the winter Solstice. This has not happened - eclipse same day as the solstice - since 1638, and wont happen again until 2094. For pagans the solstice is huge, and eclipses are meaningful too, so ... the combination should be even more.

Here is a story from the weather channel about it ..Lunar eclipses are not that rare. They are cool to see. Ill likely be at my hideout near the river watching.

Wise men, or magi ... who were they ?

Here is the story I said I was going to write about the Wisemen, or Magi, from the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus. I had meant to do it in a different format, but here it is.

In the gospel of Matthew we see the story of the birth of Jesus, and the arrival of Wise Men, or Magi, from the East. The word “wise men" is a traditional word, but in the original language, the word is Magi, or Magician.

Interim City Manager

Richard Chesney has been chosen to serve as Interim City Manager for Arkansas City, starting January 4, after current City Manager Steve Archer's resignation becomes official.
Commissioners interviewed him and Jay Newton, another candidate, during an executive session, or non-public meeting, Thursday evening. After the interviews commissioners came to a consensus on hiring Chesney. They will vote and make it official at the regular meeting next Tuesday.
Chesney is to start Jan. 4. He will be paid $2,000 per week and will also receive use of a city car, or a car reimbursement. He will stay in Arkansas City during the week, Mayor Patrick McDonald said.
The city will then begin a search for a regular full time permanent City Manager.
Over the past few years the city has had two city managers over a relatively short period of time.

Observation

I thought it was interesting that, a few days ago I posted a link to an article I wrote about the birth of Christ.
Several people were up in arms. There are about 20 comments there, many critical of me "forcing" religion on people, and I deleted several that were of the same type.
Yesterday I posted an article about the Pagan God Janus, which is where the name of the month "January" comes from.
No comments. Nothing. No one was upset about me "forcing" religion upon them.....
Just thought that was interesting and needed to be pointed out.

Time of change for city

City Commission worksession may not be all that interesting tomorrow night, except that they may interview candidates for interim city manager in executive session (non public meeting). Nothing illegal about executive sessions, and sometimes it is probably a good thing. I just want to point it out when they do it ...
The deeper issue of course is what the city commission is doing. They will be giving current City manager Steve Archer $33 grand plus other bennies in exchange for his resignation. This is in essence four months pay. During those four months the city will be paying another salary for an interim and possibly a new city manager.
The search for a new city manager will take time and money too.
We are probably looking at at least $50,000 to make this change...
Only time will tell if it is worth it.

Three city commissioners will be up for re-election in April. Deadline for applying for the race is Jan 25. at noon. The filing fee is $10. There is cost involved in running a campaign, but I suppose one could spend as much or as little as he or she wanted.
I am still thinking of running. If i did, i would have to quit the blog.
But I would like to encourage other people to run as well.
Public discourse is a good thing. The election campaign is about that.
We need vision... direction.
With the current political landscape of incumbents being unpopular in general and with the state of flux the city is in .. i think now is an excellent time for someone new to the process to run...

Worksession is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, and regular meeting is Tuesday at 7.
Say what you like about the commission, but they do welcome people at the meetings. They will let you talk even. Ive been around a lot of commissions in different states. I would have to say that the commission here is as open as any i have seen as far as letting the public speak at meetings.
Their rule that it has to be something not on the agenda does seem a bit odd, but ... if you are paying attention to the issues, there is a time when things are being discussed but not yet on the agenda, so there would be the opportunity.
Hope to have the live blog going Thursday at 5:30..

Signs and wonders in the sky

According to an email from one of the profs at Cowley College, we are in for a meteor showers the next couple of nights, and a lunar eclipse is coming soon. So some cool stuff happening in the night sky.. Just thought  i would pass this along.

The Geminids are coming!!

The Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak early Tuesday morning.  You will be able to see them after the sun goes down this evening by finding a dark location and looking toward the eastern sky.  Activity should start picking up around 8:00 – 9:00pm with the best viewing being after 2:00am tomorrow morning when the radiant, where the meteors appear to originate in the sky, is high above the horizon.  The Geminids are pieces of debris that come from asteroid 3200 Phaethon which was discovered in 1983.  Peak rates of 40+ meteors per hour are expected.

Weather permitting, we should also be able to see a total eclipse of the moon on December 21.  The earth casts a shadow behind itself in space just as a shadow is cast behind you when facing the sun.  When the alignment is just right and the moon enters this shadow, we experience a lunar eclipse.  At approximately 12:55pm on the 21st the eastern edge of the moon will start to enter the shadow of earth.  As the moon continues in its orbit, more and more of it will disappear until it is entirely eclipsed at approximately 1:55am.

The moon will begin to exit the shadow of earth at approximately 3:15am, and the entire moon will be visible by 4:20am.  Total lunar eclipses are not rare, but they don’t happen every year either.  The last lunar eclipse was two years ago and the next won’t be for another two years.  No special equipment is needed and this is a good astronomical event to take pictures of.

Happy Skies!!

City meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday

Live Blog tonight

The Live Blog will be going tonight (Tuesday) at 7. for the City Commission meeting.
Could be a very interesting meeting, as the commission will be talking about the city manager's contract.
Rumor has it that the commission is set to not renew his contract.
May or may not be true, but there are rumblings. This would be a good meeting for you to attend, for everyone to attend.
Far as I know, the City Manager has done a good job, things are going ok with the city - the recent financial audit gave them good marks, and the performance audit that the city spent around 30,000 on not too long ago, said things were basically OK.
Nothing has been said about that study since.
Things could be interesting tonight.

Cars broken into

There's been some thefts from autos recently, two ACPD press releases are below. Just a reminder to lock your vehicle.
On 11-28-2010 Officers responded to citizens’ calls that a male and female were getting into vehicles in the area.  Both suspects fled the area.  The female, Sadie Bishop 28 of Ark City was apprehended quickly.  After a short foot pursuit the male suspect, Toy James Martin, AKA “TJ” 28 of Ark City, was also apprehended.  It was found that three vehicles had been entered and items taken.  Both were transported and remain at the Cowley County Jail on charges of Burglary-Auto x2, Theft x2, and Criminal Trespass. There bond was set at $8,750.00 each.

On 11-21-2010 officers of the Arkansas CIty Police Deparment took 2 seperate reports from female victims that had purses stolen from their vehicles.  In investigation officers obtained video from different locations throughout town and 2 possible suspects were identified.  On 11-23-2010 an alert employee of SCKMC observed 2 male subjects looking in vehicles near the hospital.  Officers located these 2 subjects in Wilson Park and in talking with them learned they were responsible for the recent car burglaries.  Bot suspects, from Alabama had just recently moved to Arkansas City.  Both had stolen property on their person at the time of arrest.
After the two suspects were transported to the police deparment, they were interviewed, however was not willing to give up any additional information.  Officers did learn that the subjects had been staying at a residence in the 1000 block S. B Street.  Officers went to that residence and during a consent search of the residence located more stolen property and drug paraphernalia.  Most of the stolen property was returned to the one of the victims.
Cody Crane and Nicholas Hulsey were arrested for Burglary MV X2, Theft X2, Criminal Use of a Finacial Card, and Possession Drug Paraphenalia.  Both are currently in the custody of the Cowley County Jail on $10,000.00 bond each.

What is news

Here is a good story about the demise of news, or real news reporting. We have so many more sources now, and most people tend to get their news from sources they agree with, so ... they get a biased message and they do not get their own beliefs challenged by hearing the other side.
This story is by retired newsman Ted Kopell.

Cowley Volleyball loses in Semis, will play for third Saturday

For the second time this season, the Cowley College volleyball team suffered a five-game defeat at the hands of rival Johnson County. This time, the Lady Tigers led two games to one before the Lady Cavaliers rallied for the win by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-22, 16-14 Friday in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division II National Championships played in Wisconsin Dells, WI.
The loss was only the second in the past 35 matches for the Lady Tigers, with both defeats coming at the hands of Johnson County. The second-seeded Lady Cavaliers advance to Saturday's national title match versus ninth-seed Pasco-Hernando Community College, while the third-seeded Lady Tigers will play in the third/fourth place game vs. No. 12-seed Glendale Community College.

More details on Cowley Volleyball

By Rama Peroo
Trailing sixth-seeded Kishwaukee (IL) Community College two games to one, Cowley College head volleyball coach Jenifer Bahner made a move that would jumpstart her team to a come from behind win in the second-round of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament played Thursday in Wisconsin Dells, WI.
With her team only one game away from having its national championship dreams dashed, Bahner changed up her lineup before the fourth game and moved sophomore libero, Elena Berroteran, to the front row. The move paid off as Berroteran would spark the team and finish with nine kills in the last two games. It was only fitting that Berroteran would spike home the final point in the decisive 18-16 win of game five.

A loss this afternoon would mean they would play again Friday at 2:30 in the losers bracket.

Man dies after being crushed by car

Here is something from the Ark City Police

On 11-06-2010 around 3PM, officers were dispatched to a report of a car that had fallen on a person on north 4th street in Arkansas City.  Upon arrival, officers saw a man's legs coming from under a car.  Te front wheels had apparently been removed to work on the car.  Officers learned the identity of the man by speaking with a neighbor.  Officers tried to speak to the man but received no response.  Officers assisted a neighbor in lifiting the car off of the mane with a scissor jack provided by the man.

Two officers were then able to pull the man out from under the vehicle as EMS arrived.  The man's face was flushed, he was not breathing and he was cold to the touch.  Reports from those present indicated that the man had only been down for a couple minutes.  Officers immediately began CPR assited by EMS.  Officers continued on with rescue breaths for several minutes as EMS continued to treat the man medically.  CPR was continued as the man was transitioned to a cot, secured and placed in the back of the awaiting ambulance.  As the man was placed in the back of the ambulance he began to breath on his own.  He was later sent to Wesley by way of EagleMed and later that evening was stable an still breathing on his own.  I understand, howeer, that the man died of his injuries the following day.

Due to the officers' and neighbor's quick thinking to get the man from under the car and to begin CPR as quickly as they did, the man lived for several more hours. These officers and the neighbor should be commended for their actions.  The Arkansas City Police Deprtment urges persons working on their autos to take every precaution to secure them before getting under the auto to service them.  Accidents such as this are almost always preventable.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the man's family.

Acosta repeats as Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player; Barto named Freshman of the Year

Putting together one of the best regular seasons in school history, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team was well represented on the All-Conference and All-District teams.
Highlighting the selections were sophomore Roslandy Acosta and freshman Emily Barto. Acosta was named the Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player for the second straight year, while Barto was tabbed the Jayhawk East Freshman of the Year. This marks the second straight year a Cowley player has won the awards.

Hope for the future

There is reason to be positive in Arkansas City, though I'm sure they resident naysayers will find problems, but, after Tuesday's city meeting, I was encouraged.
A contract for the hike and bike trail was approved. They were almost at this point a few years ago, but the commission failed to push it through. Hopefully this time it will make it, and it looks like it will. It is not going to cost the city anything, or not much anyway, with the state picking up the tab. Someone on the blog raised the issue that state money is still tax money, so it is still costing us something. Granted, it is still tax money, but it is money already paid. The only question is where it will be spent. It would be just plain stupid to turn it down and let some other town have the money, when we have paid the taxes already.
So it looks like it will make it this time. Still, its a year away from being completed.
This adds to the quality of life, one more thing that makes the town appealing. Any industry or business looking to locate here- not to mention any families that might be considering moving - look at amenities a town has. A hike and bike trail on the levee is a positive that can only help.
It has the potential to attract other businesses as well, and could eventually raise property values, which will raise money for local government. That means more services without more taxes.

The second thing that was encouraging was the report from the group involved with the recreation commission to develop ponds in the area. McFarland Pond and Kneebler are the main ones. Some nice things have been done at Veterans pond .. er lake. More needs to be done, and adding the others to the mix is good too.
This is another thing that can improve quality of life and could improve property values.
They will be looking for state and federal grants. We need to be taking advantage of those because we have already paid the taxes. Currently our tax money goes for projects in other towns and other states, so we should be able to reap some benefit through a deal like this.
Id like to see the rivers get included more in this development, but all things take time.
It was good to see the group making their presentation. These are people with some vision. That is what we need in Arkansas City, more vision, more ideas, and more people willing to actually make them happen.
(there was a rather lengthy executive session after Tuesday's meeting, involving lawyers. There are some negative things going on as well, and no one is talking. It will break before long though.)

Volleyball update

The Cowley College volleyball team will host its district tournament Saturday, and will advance to the nationals if they win the tournament.

Cowley will now turn its attention to hosting the District N Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Tigers will face Allen County (16-19) at 10 a.m., while Butler (26-10) and Coffeyville (23-17) will square off at noon. The winner of the day’s first two matches will play in the championship match at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to the national tournament in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

Cowley lost at Johnson County a week or so ago, but Johnson is a huge rival and also a top-five team. The two could meet again at the nationals. The first time Cowley went to the nationals they played Johnson County in the finals in Arizona. Cowley has returned to the nationals every year since then. I believe this is the sixth year if they make it.
Cowley should win, but you never know. Cowley has beaten all three teams during the regular season.
Come on out and support the team on Saturday.

Williams crowned Queen Alalah LXXIX

By Rama Peroo
Cowley College
Having been crowned Little Miss Arkalalah at the age of five, Jordan Williams is now all grown up as evidenced by her being crowned Queen Alalah LXXIX during the coronation ceremony held Friday at Cowley’s Robert Brown Theatre.
Williams, an Arkansas City native, is the daughter of Kevin and Teri Williams.
The first runner-up was Jade Sparks, another Ark City native. The other three candidates were Jessica Coldwell, Amy Dunlap, and Erin Griffiths.
Williams attested to being the most nervous of the five candidates, but said the end result made it all worth while.
“Being crowned Queen Alalah is amazing,” Williams said. “This was an awesome experience that I will always remember.”
Queen Alalah LXXVIII, Ali Nittler, was on hand to pass her crown onto Williams.
The coronation also had performances by Prairie Voice, Ark High Singers, Ark City Dance, AC All Starz, and Ryan Smykil.
Lance Niles served as the Master of Ceremonies and introduced the former queens and the visiting queens from surrounding towns in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma.
Union State Bank president, John Sturd, was introduced as the 2010 Arkalalah parade grand marshal. While, Jevin Foust and Madi Jennings were crowned Little Mister and Miss Arkalalah.
At Cowley, Williams is the vice president of fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa, is a student ambassador, and is a member of the spirit squad.

8 wonders of kansas history

The Kansas Sampler Foundation has announced the winners of the 8 wonders of Kansas History.
It is the final 8-wonders contest. Here is a story about the winners and the program
It is a fairly clever way to promote tourism in the state. Personally, I cant believe Buckskin Joe is not on the list. :)
but then I am biased in that area.
There are a lot of interesting things to do and see in Kansas.

OSU's Blackmon suspended one game

Oklahoma State Coach Mike Gundy announced today that receiver Justin Blackmon will be suspended for one game, and will not play against Kansas State this weekend. Blackmon was arrested and charged with DUI in Texas late Monday night.

Blackmon appeared with the coach at a press conference Tuesday and apologized for the incident.
Say what you will about college athletics, but it is not every day that a suspended player appears at a press conference and confronts the issue. I think that says more for his character than one bad decision (dui) does. In Texas you can be charged with dui if you have had any at all if you are under 21 years old.

Politics as usual, voting etc.

Here are a few political stories.
One is about a ruling that Arizona cannot require proof of citizenship for people to register to vote. The court did not comment on the requirement that people show identification in order to vote.
Ive got to be with the Libertarians and Conservatives on this one. There was a move like this in Kansas a few years ago, but it never got passed. I was amazed when i first voted in Kansas and was not required to show any ID. How easy would it be to claim you are someone and vote. You could vote several times in a day by stealing votes this way.
Being a citizen is pretty important when it comes to voting. I dont see anything racial about this at all.
But then here is a story about perhaps going too far the other way. Tea partiers going too far??? Say it aint so Joe.
Then there is the story about campaign financing. You've heard the Dems whining about Pub spending, but it turns out, Dems actually are spending more than Pubs.
And the lobbyists are not far behind. So even when Pubs get elected next week, the money still needs to be followed.

Cowley Volleyball wins 29th in a row

Playing its final regular season home match, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team clinched at least a share of its third straight conference title with a 25-15, 25-27, 25-10, 25-14 won over Coffeyville Community College Monday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Cowley, winners of 29 matches in a row, improves to 29-2 overall, 9-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, and 10-0 in Region VI. Cowley has now won 24 home matches in a row dating back to the 2008 season, while head coach Jenifer Bahner has never witnessed her team lose at W.S. Scott Auditorium as she is now 18-0 at home as coach of the Lady Tigers.
“The support we have gotten from the students and the community has been great,” Bahner said. “Their support helps the girls step their game up and play at a high level.”
Bahner talked to her team about minimizing its errors after the 25-27 loss to Coffeyville in game two. The team regrouped and took care of business in the final two games.
Sophomore Kelsy Patterson entered the match in game three and sparked the team by finishing with six kills and no hitting errors.
“Kelsy has been limited by a knee injury but she has not let that dampen her spirits,” Bahner said. “She brings the team so much energy and I am proud of her for going in there and helping the team.”
Freshman Danika Maggard also stepped up big and shared team-high honors with Roslandy Acosta with 13 kills.
“This was a great night for Danika,” Bahner said. ‘I challenged her after the match to be more consistent because I know she can do it.”
Sophomore Sarah Skinner also stepped up with 11 kills, while Elena Berroteran finished with 26 digs.
The conference title and top-seed in the Region VI Tournament will all come down to Wednesday night’s match at No. 3-ranked Johnson County at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers currently hold a one-game lead over the Lady Cavaliers in both the conference and the region. Johnson County, which is 21-5 overall, suffered its lone conference/region defeat against Highland.
“This is what you work so hard for,” Bahner said. “No. 1 versus No. 3 makes for a very big match.”

Arkalalah Medallion Clue 2

CLUE 2
Happy Monday my fellow mates
To what we owe and plunder
A saying comes to me great mind
Oh say ye do not blunder
“We Live in deeds not years...”
Yes indeed we do .  While some gave their all, lest we never forget them
But, I digress as such the case.  And in no certain place.
But when you Google the quote, read it all my friends, read it all…
And do not surround yourself in thy moat.
Listen to the music, fight Dragons from within
I know you are confused, and many want to search
Search as you may
You won’t find it right away
Unless you see the birch
Street or tree,  street  or  tree…perhaps it is time to leave

Arkalalah

Hey its Arkalalah week. The Arkalalah people have a nice little website now where you can get lots of information.
The medallion hunt is on. Here is a link to where you can get the clues for free.
Ill post them here as well. Im sure the local paper has some heartburn over this. It used to be the only place you could get clues and you had to buy a paper to do it. Times change eh.
I always enjoy trying to figure out where it might be, but have never actually looked.

Here is the first clue

medallionHave you seen this Medallion?
CLUE 1
Within this area lies medallion hysteria
Go for a lark in Wilson Park
Between Summit Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks
Don’t dig to be on the right track
Many tools exist to help your quest
You decide which is best

Maybe we could talk about the hunt on here? Where do you think it might be?

Here is the schedule of events

And here is a link to food concessions that open Wednesday 11 a.m.

Political merry go round

Good Monday Morning.
I hope to get back to regular posting now. Just had a few projects that I had to deal with.
I have kind of backed off the politics. On one hand, that is what generates comments and page views, but on the other - its just the same stuff over and over.
I would like to see some new ideas. About all the Liberals or Conservatives can say is that the other side is worse than they are. Ive said it before, I think the Liberal and Conservative battle is a huge part of the problem. Maybe their greatest attribute is that they keep the other side from getting too much power.
Both sides have strengths and weaknesses.
But both sides are also a spin on reality - not reality itself.
The thing is, as far as I can tell, neither side is at all interested in solving actual problems.  And neither side has any actual ideas.

I would suggest trying to look at issues objectively, using your own common sense and experiences and knowledge. I wish we had more choices than two at election time. Having only two choices is no choice at all.
In 2003 we gave the publicans the presidency, the house and the senate ...
In 2008 we gave that to the dems.
Now in 2010 it looks like the pubs will gain control of the house at least, if not the senate also.
Is that all politics is about?

I cant see that either of those two elections has made any difference. The economy went bad. It was good in the late 90s and early 00's .. Of course both sides took credit when it was good and blamed the other when it went bad. The economy goes in cycles. If you look back as far as the 1880s.. there have been times of depression and economic prosperity.

So. what is my point? The point is that there is no political solution. We need new ideas, new parties, new strategies. The tea party at least is a step in that direction, even though it is just another flavor of republican. BUT, at least it is a step. So even though im not a fan of the tea party, at least I like the idea of another party.
If it has some success there will be others.
There are usually other parties on the ballot every election. People say its a wasted vote - of course thats just a ploy used by both sides to get you to pick one or the other - but it is a start. If more people would vote for another party, we might eventually see some progress.

From a Bob Dylan song
"you must pick one or the other though neither of them will be what they claim"

NPR political correctness

Hijacking a comment on another thread on here

Question: Does anyone on here have an opinion on NPR's canning of Juan Williams? Personally, I think it's a lesson in political correctness run amok. William's comments (in context) do not warrant firing. This wouldn't be so bad, if NPR weren't taking my hard earned tax $$ everyday just to stay on-air. If they want to play the game, let them do like MSNBC, CBS & the rest and pay their own way.

>>
Here is my take: I think it is really bad political correctness. I agree with the above, in context, it wasnt that bad of a thing. I just wondered though, what would have happened if he had made critical remarks about Christians. That seems to be pretty well ok.
Muslims are not a race of people. They are a religion, like christianity, judiasm, hindus .. .pagans, whatever.
I dont even like the idea of being politically correct.
Our culture is much too into this Not offending anyone mindset.
There was a surpreme court ruling once on a different topic, where the court said you do not have a constitutional right to not be offended.
If we do live in a multicultural society, there is bound to be some things you dont agree with .. and some things that are offensive. You cant have it both ways. Diversity means ... different. And Tolerance should mean accepting those that are different .. Tolerance does not mean you have a right to not be offended.

One point though. NPR does not get tax money. It lives off donations from private people.

Political games as election nears

On the political front, The races are heating up even more as the election nears. The race in Kentucky is real hot. Here is a story about the debate and the dems attack on the tea party candidates' religion. Here is a link to the story.

Some of the Tea Party candidates do sound a bit strange. BUT, it also seems the Democrats are desperate and are doing anything they can to help with the perception that Tea Party people are crazy or extreme.

Im not sold on the Tea Party by any means, and probably wont be. But my reasons are more philosophical than sensational.

I am just not convinced that small government in and of itself is the answer to all our problems. That seems to be the mantra of the tea party, yet ... do they have any proof that less government is better? They just yell that it is better even louder when questioned.

Here is a question. The tea party folks want smaller government and think government is the enemy. If they get to be in charge of the government, will government STILL be the enemy?? If so, will they fire themselves? ... just wondering how the logic of that will play out.

Reminds me of the book Animal Farm...

Still, the Democrat shenanigans show their fear and desperation. Their moves to paint all tea partiers as extremists ... is a rather extreme move.

Ok, Ive attacked both sides here, so ... I feel I have accomplished something.

Monday, City Commission, Economic Forum

I plan on being at the city commission meeting Tuesday night with the live blog. Not much on the agenda. But what's happening - or might be happening - behind the scenes is interesting. Lots of executive sessions lately, and no one is talking about what they are talking about.
Should be interesting once it all shakes out, if it ever does.

Economic forum Friday. Should be interesting. But I am not sure why it is on Friday morning when people can all come out real easily. Oh wait, people have jobs... I am going to try to go. I am self employed now, and oddly enough, sometimes I have less time available than  I had when i actually went to an office to work. Strange how that works out.
Still, the forum thing should be interesting. Also there will be representatives from various agencies there, which is what I think will be most interesting.
There are so many things out there that are possible. Where is the vision?

Friday morning update

I was unable to get to the city worksession last night. Had another small trip, work related.
Tomorrow night there is the thing at the museum. Lots of historical characters will be beside their "graves" doing some haunting, including Buckskin Joe. And there is a maze of scary halloween stuff.
It starts at 6 p.m. Saturday evening. It will also be held the following weekend Friday and Saturday.

The Chile miners are all out and safe. That was quiet a story. The Chile people seem to have their act together. They also had the big earthquake awhile back, and handled that themselves too.
Stories are starting to come out now about what life was like in the mines.
Here is a story from a UK paper.
There were some conflicts looks like. You would expect that. Im not too surprised, but they came through it all ok.

Ark City cops make burglary arrest

On 10-06-2010 officers of the Arkansas City Police Department responded to the Tropics Bar 1121 South Summit in reference to a Burglary to the business.  Upon arrival officers learned that an unknown person or persons had entered the business and stole several bottles of alcohol.  As officers were investigating and checking the area they also noticed damage done to the rear door of the Alumni Bar and Grill 1107 South Summit.  Evidence was recovered at the scene and held for further investigation.

Cowley Volleyball beats Seminole State

Cowley's Lindsey Chandler gets a kill over Laisha Davis of Seminole State during Tuesday's game.
Emily Barto reacts to a good play.
The Cowley College Volleyball team held its own and emerged with a 3-1 win over Seminole State Tuesday evening. Seminole State is a Division I junior college team and is ranked. Cowley is ranked No. 1 in Division II.
The teams were evenly matched.
Both had their moments and runs. Cowley won the first game and lost the second and both games were fairly tight. Third game, toward the end it looked like Seminole State was going to win. A couple of timeouts in a fairly short amount of time got the Lady Tigers going. From that point they played much better.
The fourth game went to extra points, and Seminole was in position to win at one point, serving with a one point lead at the end, but Cowley managed three unanswered points to take the win and avoid the fifth game.
The Lady Tigers have a couple more games at home before the playoffs.

The Fifth Down: Local connection to history

It was 20 years ago today (Oct. 6) that the infamous "fifth down" cost Missouri an upset against Colorado. Colorado went on to win the game and a share of the national title, which would not have happened if a mistake had not caused them to get five downs instead of four at the end of the game.
I do remember the game.
Here is a link to a story about it.

What happened was, during the wild and crazy moments of the game, after one of the timeouts, the linesman failed to switch the down counter from second to third down. No one on the field noticed even though folks in the pressbox were going crazy.
Ok so why am I bringing this up?
What I did not know, that the head official was J.C. Louderback of Arkansas City. He was not the official who failed to change the down counter, but he did bear ultimate responsibility for keeping up with the downs during the game as the head referee. - Just in case there are some totally non football people out there who have no idea what a down is, - it would be like getting an extra strike in baseball.

I can totally understand how you might lose track of the down if you were in the heat of battle in a game like that. You look up at the down marker and see what it is and make your strategy, you don't necessarily keep up with whether it changed or not if you are a coach or player.
But the thing is. the mistake happened on second down. so. The quarterback spiked the ball on what he thought was third down to stop the clock. Had the marker said 4th down (which it should have) he would have run a play instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock. So they might have scored anyway, so ... as in anything, live is complicated.

But I did think it was interesting that there was such a strong Arkansas City connection.

City Commission, 7 p.m., Tuesday

Debate fodder about government

Here is a story that will get a debate going.
Seems a town in Tennessee arranged with another town to give it fire protection. Then everyone in the town was told to pay $75 per year for fire protection to pay the other town.
So a house caught on fire and the guy had not paid. The Fire Dept responded to keep the neighbors house - who had paid - from catching fire, but did nothing to put out the original fire.
So the debate rages now. Should the fire dept have put out the fire anyway and saved the guys house?
Its a no-win situation. If the Fire dept puts it out, then there is no incentive for any other citizen to pay the fee.
The guy actually admitted that he deliberately did not pay the fee. He said he thought they would come  and put out the fire anyway.
This does speak to the role of government. Everyone on their own is not necessarily a good thing.
I think this is why in most most areas taxes are collected from everyone to avoid such a situation.

Cowley College growing

Recent Enrollment figures released by the Kansas Board of Regents show Cowley College to be the fastest growing college in the state of Kansas.
Cowley’s enrollment increased a whopping 21.2 percent from the fall 2009 semester to the fall 2010 semester. Cowley had an increase of 847 students to bring its total to 4,850 students that are taking classes at either the school’s main campus in Arkansas City, its Allied Health Center in Winfield, its Mulvane Campus, or online.
“After what happened to us a couple of years ago with the loss of our Southside Education Center in Wichita, this increase in enrollment was a real blessing and a credit to all of our employees,” Cowley president Dr. Patrick J. McAtee said. “When you have success like this it is the result of hard work done by a lot of people.”
Cowley’s growth was not the norm as eight of the 19 Kansas community colleges saw a decrease in enrollment and only one school (Barton County) besides Cowley saw an increase in enrollment of more than 6 percent.
Overall, there was an increase of 3,237 students at the state’s 32 public universities, community colleges, and technical colleges.  This represents a 1.8% systemwide increase for the 2010 fall academic semester over the 2009 fall academic semester.  The systemwide enrollment of 187,398 is reported as of the 20th day of classes.
At the seven public universities, enrollment was up by 364 students, or 0.4%.  At the 19 community colleges, enrollment was up by 2,609 students, or 3.3%.  At the six technical colleges, enrollment was up by 264 students, or 5.7%.

KU football at turning point

After KU's loss to Baylor, there are rumblings in Lawrence about whether or not Turner Gill is the right coach for the Jayhawks. I think its still too early to tell, but it isn't looking all that good. A good showing against K-State would go a long way. So far the team has had a good week followed by a bad week, so .. the cycle would be to have a good week against K-State.
I have posted some links to some columns about the game and the KU football situation  on the football blog. which is at www.big12voices.blogspot.com

Cowley volleyball rolls on

Roslandy Acosta slams home a kill Monday night
Getting big games from sophomores Sarah Skinner and Meghan Cahill, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team picked up its 20th straight victory with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-11 win over Independence Monday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The victory improved the Lady Tigers’ record to 20-2 overall and kept Cowley a half game in front of Johnson County for first place in the conference and region. Cowley is currently 6-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division and 7-0 in Region VI play.
“We had people step up in areas we had been struggling and our offense did well,”
Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. “But, we need to improve on our errors. We gave Independence a lot of points and we have got to make teams earn their points.”
Skinner and Cahill each finished with nine kills in the win.
“Sarah did really well in the middle for us, and Meghan has been working really hard and is a good leader for our team,” Bahner said. “We need her (Meghan) to lead and contribute on the court as well, so it was good to see her do both tonight.”
The Lady Pirates, who dropped to 2-12 overall and 1-5 in the Jayhawk East, battled hard the first two games but could never get over the hump. In game three, Cowley raced out to an 11-2 lead before Independence pulled within 14-8. Cowley would finish the match by scoring 11 of the final 14 points, and got a huge spike from sophomore Roslandy Acosta to cap the team’s 21st straight win at home.
Acosta finished the match with 11 kills and 18 assists, while freshman setter Molley Scanlon added 18 assists and nine digs. Also contributing to the win were Elena Berroteran (10 digs) and Kaitlin Stearns (three aces).
Cowley will put its winning streak on the line when they take part in the Central Nebraska Tournament Friday and Saturday in Platte, NE. On Friday, the Lady Tigers will square off against No. 10-ranked North Platte Community College (16-7) at 3 p.m., before facing second-ranked Iowa Lakes Community College (19-4) at 7 p.m.
Cowley will wrap up play in the tournament on Saturday by taking on Central Nebraska at 10:30 a.m. and Neosho County (5-18) at 12:30 p.m.
Bahner is looking forward to having her team take on a pair of schools ranked in the top-10 on Friday.
“This weekend will present a good test for us,” Bahner said. “It will be good to be challenged a bit. If we keep working hard our offense will flow from there.”

Freedom of speech issue

Interesting story out of the Netherlands this morning.
AMSTERDAM — Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders went on trial Monday for alleged hate speech, even as his popularity and influence in the Netherlands are near all time highs.
Prosecutors say Wilders incited hatred against Muslims with remarks comparing Islam to Naziism and by calling for a ban on the Quran. Wilders argues he has a right to freedom of speech and his remarks were within the bounds of the law.

Here are links to a couple stories. This is more about politics than anything. Wilders is gaining a lot of ground in the Netherlands. Even prosecutors are saying that if they win a conviction, they will recommend no penalty. Still, it raises interesting questions about freedom of speech.
Here is one story from Reuters
and here is another, this one from AP

I also ran across some interesting political stories this morning.
One is about elitism.. Just who are the elitists ??
and another about the failure of the two-party political system

9-11 conspiracy theorists

Here is an AP story about how many in the muslim world believe the U.S. was behind the 9-11 terrorist attacks, and how even  some Americans believe the theories. Bush done it ! sort of thing.
Here is the link

The thing that is interesting to me is just the whole idea of conspiracy theory.
People believe what they want to believe. Several theories involved in the shooting of JFK. There are theories - and websites - showing how the moon landings never happened.
Here is an quote from the story about 9-11

"All this, of course, would require hundreds if not thousands of people to be in on the plot. It speaks volumes for the determination to believe something," said David Aaronovitch, the British author of "Voodoo Histories: the role of Conspiracy Theory in Modern History."

"Conspiracy theories exist in the realm of myth, where imaginations run wild, fears trump facts, and evidence is ignored. As a superpower, the United States is often cast as a villain in these dramas," the site says. (the U.S. Govt site)
Conspiracy theories run wild in AC too. Why do people want to believe these theories.
It does get in the way of rational discussion about issues, as the article points out.

Longview no match for No. 1-ranked Lady Tigers

With Longview Community College entering Thursday’s match at No. 1-ranked Cowley College with a record of 11-4, it appeared the Lady Lakers could present a challenge to the Lady Tigers. That turned out not to be the case as Cowley continued its dominance with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-14 victory.

Police will be training Friday morning

Arkansas City Police will be conducting a drill Friday morning, starting at 7 and lasting until about 10. The area will be around the police station and city hall. The drill is part of the Child Abduction Response Team. Ark City PD is getting certified by national and state officials.
Ark City police, Fire and EMS, Winfield Police, Sheriff, Highway patrol, will be participating in a mock amber alert situation.
The purpose is to make sure agencies are able to respond adequately if a real situation should arise.
So there should be a lot of cop activity around town in the morning. Its just a drill.

Hike-Bike Path and City Commission

Looks like the hike and bike trail is finally going to become a reality. A letter in the City Commission packet, from the Kansas Dept of Transportation, says the state will pay all the cost of the project. The city's share was to have been $500,000. The state was going to pay part of it anyway, but these are some Obama Stimulus Package funds being spread around.
It is already out to bid, and big opening is set for Oct. 22, and the city could give approval at its first meeting in November. There really isnt anything for the city to do at this point, but they still have to give the OK to letting the state pick up the tab.

Here are the items on the agenda for Thursday's worksession. Worksession is at 5:30 p.m., I will have the live blog going.

1. Good neighbor award to Curt Freeland
2. Special assessment on various properties for weed cutting and removal of junk and debris.
3. Consider request to withdraw petition for rezoning on Kansas Ave., from business to industrial.
4. Agreement for wastewater discharge from Kan Pak
5. Consider purchase of 33 acres from AC Industries in the Goff Industrial Park.

Exploring Oklahoma

We went on one of our spontaneous trips again, this time to Oklahoma to explore Route 66. We had planned on going a few weeks ago but somehow didn't go, and this last weekend seemed like a good time.
This is the "mother road" .. the famous road between Chicago and California. When it was done in 1926 it was the only road in the country that went across country - even though it was only halfway across.
Driving must have been quiet an experience back then. It is interesting to look at some maps from that time and earlier. Some were not accurate, some were intentionally misleading and at times you could have maps that showed different things.
You may still drive on parts of the original 66. One part in northeast oklahoma, has the original surface from 1926. It is only 8 feet wide. I know cars were smaller then, but .. must have been interesting at times. Probably wasn't all that much traffic anyway. Other areas the strip is wider.  The road also took up trails and used them at times. The Ozark Trail was used in eastern Oklahoma.

The road follows what is now Interstate 40 a lot, but there are still those old areas where you can drive the original road. Some of the old hotels and restaurants are still around as well. Its not that hard to tell the difference between the real things and  those things that try to be real.
The road went through the very southeast corner of Kansas near Baxter Springs. We started there and went as far as Oklahoma City, which took three days.

Free speech isnt so free ?

The Supreme Court will be hearing a case next week involving the Phelps crew up in Topeka. They lost a lawsuit a couple years ago and it is making its way through the appeals process.
As bad and evil as those people are, it still raises interesting questions about freedom of speech.
There is something to the idea that a military funeral is private and a special thing, so there could be exceptions made.. but where do you stop the exceptions.
Here is a paragraph from an AP story

The trouble is, once courts begin making exceptions of this sort, the First Amendment quickly gets whittled away. There are those who argue for creating free-speech exceptions for Nazis marching through the town square or for the burning of holy books of one sort or another. Almost everyone has some kind of speech they regard as intolerable - they just do not agree on what that speech is.

Here is a link to the story.

I think the speech itself should be protected, but you do have conflicting rights at times. Such is the nature of freedom. Even though speech should be protected, there should not be protection from the repercussions of utilizing that freedom.  I would still be against any hate speech law of any kind.
