City

Looks like  I picked a bad time to miss a meeting Tuesday night. Had something come up, was unavoidable.
But Ill try to get back in the saddle for the next one.
There are some strange things going on right now around town hall. The chief of administration, Lane Massey, has resigned. Lots of people have quit and there are rumors of others doing so as well.
And the commission wants a new direction with a new city manager.
There does seem to be some discontent in all circles.
Thus the need for more focused leadership.
The commission should be setting policy and not be involved in day to day matters at all.
at least thats my take on it.
Is anyone getting ready to run for commission?????

  1. JJ, your take on city hall is way off. It's Ark City. All sorts of names being tossed about for the next election, a good "newsperson" could come up with them.... :)

I think the current commission got pulled into the micromanaging of day to day operations by some of the Administration, Staff and Dept. Heads missteps!

  3. JJ don't let the naysayers tear you down. You are right. The problem is this commission can never make a decision and stick with it. They always change their minds and blame everyone else. If they could make a decision the manager could direct staff to follow their policy. The problem is this commission has never thought far enough ahead to set a policy. They are too busy directing staff on a daily basis to have time for policy(I'm not sure but I think that is called micro managing and it looks to me like they JUMPED into it...not got pulled into it).

It is well known Kuhn and Snell gave the manager an option to be demoted if he would fire at least one person. I keep hearing from people Commissioner Smith has brought up several names of people she wants to get rid of because she doesn't like them. Is this micromanaging?

It is sad to see a group of people purposely try to destroy the city and peoples lives for their personal agendas.

  4. Heard a rumor today, person is usually reliable, but it could just be talk, so...take it for what it's worth. The talk is that Snell will be stepping down as commissioner, and will be hired as manager.

It probably never occured to you that those people (the one who lives they want to destroy) at the City had their on agendas?

That water bill remedy was one example, the misuse and lack of training on the billing software was another one (even if it wasn't the most up to date system)), there must have been some missteps at the FD, a resignation and personal complaint against another Dept head
(all the details kept from the public?)....!

I think it could be said there was dis-unity as far as policy and direction on both sides!

I guess, naysayers never get the facts right!
(Shoot, maybe the facta the Public got from either side wasn't right! But then, events they speak volumes!)

  6. LOL..8:27 But seriously."The commission should be setting policy and not be involved in day to day..." I believe that's partly true. That's why we hire a MANAGER. jj, your statement tells why Mr. Russell is no longer here. Question: How many thousands (1000's) of $$ did we spend to find Mr. Russell? IDK, but it was a bunch. I know, because I was there and I remember. Now look...the guy never even got a chance. It takes years to even get a handle on that job. i.e., learn the people, town, staff, direction, etc. Mr. Archer was just pulled in on a last ditch, last minute grab. (He was rejected in the original manager search. remember?) I kind of feel for Mr. Archer....kinda. To some degree, the Commission has to be involved in day to day. (Townspeople calling them at home nonstop) Oh...how I miss Curt.

  7. What is this commission doing? What is there vision? Seems all they are doing is tearing this town down by driving out good people. They drove out Doug Russell and makes me wonder how much that cost the tax payers. Paid Archer over $30,000 to resign and keep quite. City sources say they paid the fire chief $75,000 to leave and keep quite....wonder how much they paid Baugher and now Lane Massey....if all these people were so bad why didnt they just fire them all but paid them to keep quite. Wonder what they know? Seems to be a very destructive path our City is on. Why would any quality people want to work here?

  8. There are tons fo good people in Arkansas City with no plan to leave for any reason, andcertainly no plans to leave because of this commission. So much hype and "chicken little" extremism shows up these blogs.

Maybe just speak for yourself instead assuming yourselves the authority on the pulse of the community. I imagine even the anonymous poster who shared those comments isn't really planning on leaving this town so where's the need for your "all the good people" hype? Or, maybe you're not part of the good people and that's why you're staying?

As far as sticking to plans, I am fairly certain they won't be changing their minds about any of the staff member departures.

How's that for a bit of sticktuitivity??
