Friday morning update

I was unable to get to the city worksession last night. Had another small trip, work related.
Tomorrow night there is the thing at the museum. Lots of historical characters will be beside their "graves" doing some haunting, including Buckskin Joe. And there is a maze of scary halloween stuff.
It starts at 6 p.m. Saturday evening. It will also be held the following weekend Friday and Saturday.

The Chile miners are all out and safe. That was quiet a story. The Chile people seem to have their act together. They also had the big earthquake awhile back, and handled that themselves too.
Stories are starting to come out now about what life was like in the mines.
Here is a story from a UK paper.
There were some conflicts looks like. You would expect that. Im not too surprised, but they came through it all ok.

  1. Off topic: But this is interesting!

Berlin, Germany (CNN) -- Multiculturalism in Germany has "absolutely failed," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told her party's youth wing at a conference Saturday.

"The approach of saying, 'Well, let's just go for a multicultural society, let's coexist and enjoy each other,' this very approach has failed, absolutely failed," she said in a speech.

The remarks echo a comment she made to CNN last month in response to a question from Becky Anderson about Germany's Muslim population.

"We've all understood now that immigrants are a part of our country, (but) they have to speak our language, they have receive an education here," Merkel told CNN's "Connect the World" program September 27.

Germany's population is about 5 percent Muslim, the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life estimated last year. Its roughly 4 million Muslims make up the largest Muslim population in western Europe.

  2. So what's your point? You support or against this? Tell you what - replace the word "Muslim" in this article with the word "Jew" and you may see a bit of deja vu. So I ask again - are you in agreement with the German Chancellor?

I think she made her own point - which is that immigration that is not assimilated into the original society through some common means!
Like language, common laws, education, etc.
Becomes a threat to that original Society!
Because those immigrants want to change that Society or at least their part of that Society to reflect their own values/religion/culture or country!
It only works if immigrants are willing to compromise and to become part of that Society! (I.E. be Germans or Americans First!)
Things like laws, language and education are crucial to their (immigrants) and the original countries success!
(i.e. they should be willing to adapt to fit in not make the majority adjust to just fit them in!)

I agree with that completely. I will learn Snanish if I ever decide to live in Mexico. Since they have decided to live here, they should learn English.

  5. Bet you can't give me the names of two Mexicans who are not trying to learn English that you actually know of individually.

  6. Agreed 7:09
I don't know any that don't speak English. Submitter was (weakly) trying to make an anti-immigration point. Apparently has never experienced Chinatown, Miami, the Germanic upper midwest, etc. Brings me back to my point at 3:57.

  7. @7:09....boy...you must not get out much. Have you seen the average Mexican? Guess not. I have. Worked with them. interacted with them lots. Many of the older ones actually feel they are "betraying" their heritage by learning English. (Plus, it's a lot of trouble to learn English) Many, many that have been here for years carry a younger one around just to translate. It's quite a show, which I feel sure the younger ones hate. Again, not because they can't learn English, they CHOOSE not. It's a joke. If this sounds racist, it's not. It's fact. Maybe some local business people can verify. 6:10 has it right. What would I look like living in Mex for years and refusing to learn Spanish. Insane.

  8. In a related article, a recent poll in Berlin finds that 1 in 10 Germans are so xenophobic that they would like to see the return of having a Führer" that would "govern with a hard hand for the good of Germany" Yikes. I think te original poster would be a fan.

If they don't speak English, how did you come about the direct quote 'betraying?' Do you know the Spanish word for betraying? Or did one of their cherubic translators give you that stat?

I think she has a valid point which isn't necesarily anti-immigration! It is more about how immigration should be acheived and the over-all goal!
To make them citizens of the HOST Country!
That doesn't mean they have to abandon their heritage!

Yeah, I've been to some of those places! But I don't really have to leave the area to see or talk to immigrants! Not all of them are Mexican either - Asians, India(ns), Middle Eastern etc.
The second and later generations usually are the ones that get assimilated! The clash of cultures comes when immigration is unregulated or uncontrolled. Once a counter culture gets established it often works against the Host! IMHO.

    .
Yes, or maybe you just made up that stuff about Mexicans not learning English. You cant name two. Maybe you could name one then.
    Probably not.
    So where are they?
All I want is to see one that refuses to learn English.

  14. in my line of work i go to peoples homes on a daily basis and find quite often that the older persons do not know how to speak ( or so they let on) english so i have to go through a child to get my point across it is sometimes very difficult and i have gone so far as to call a friend of mine to translate for me. d

  15. That would be more common for older people. Younger people pick up a new language much easier, younger the better as far as language goes. It isnt that easy to learn a new language.

  16. The posters who think that all the Mexicans in town can speak English probably also think they are all here legally. As someone who works with the public, I see hispanics all the time who cannot speak English.

  18. Ok, Einstein. 1st there is no such thing as all or every. No one said that. I said "many". Sure, it's tough learning a new language. (I'd hate to learn one) BUT...the point is...i would if i found it necessary to communicate. If I lived Saudia Arabia, i'd be picking up a few Arabic words and probably classes. mainly because i hate not being able to know what people are saying about me. jk. Just help me out and learn to talk with me, if you been here 5-10 years...
