The United Nations estimates that there are currently 1 Billion people in the world suffering from severe malnutrition, while another 1 Billion are severely undernourished. This means that 1 in 3 people in the world today are going to bed hungry. 6 million children will die this year from hunger, and hunger related illness. That’s 1 every 6 seconds, 10 every minute, 600 every hour.

That’s more children than the entire population of Arkansas City, dying every day.

In such a world of plenty, it doesn’t have to be this way. It is estimated that the world produces enough food for every man woman and child to have nearly 4.5 pounds of food per day.

Soon, the communities of Cowley County and beyond will have the opportunity to partner with Numana; a Kansas based non-profit hunger relieforganization, whose mission is to “Empower People to Save theStarving.” Together we
ill share our resources, in an effort to package 200,000 meals as we join with others across the country to help alleviate hunger around the world. Cowley County Saves the Starving will take place on November 20th, 2010 at Strother Field in the old Central Book Manufacturing warehouse.

Numana is a KANSAS non-profit organization formed in 2008 as an international hunger relief organization. Since December 2009, Numana has coordinated 120,000 volunteers to package onearly 21 million meals. The meals consist of rice, soy, freeze dried beans and 21 vitamins targeted to help the immune system of malnourished people. Packaging events have occurred from California to Connecticut, and Chicago to Arkansas.

To be successful, $60,000 needs to be raised. The cost of a meal is just 30 cents; $3 pays for 10 meals, $30 pays for 100 meals, and $300 pays for 1,000. If just 200 churches, business, civic organizations and individualscould make a commitment to feed 1000 people, our event will be a success. “To reach our goal we are asking for monetary donations of any size. Groups may have fundraisers or just make donations.” Donations may be sent to: Donations can be sent to Cowley County Feeds the Starving c/o RCB Bank, P.O. Box 1047, Arkansas City, KS 67005 – Attn: Carla Barnard.

Equally important as the financial side of the event, is the manpower needed for the packaging event itself. Meals are packaged in an assembly line fashion in two hour shifts. To make the day flow smoothly, you are asked to register for a 2 hour time slot for the packaging event. Participants may register at: cowley.numanainc.com, or by calling 620-221-4500 days, or evenings 620-506-1557. Participants may register individually, or together as a family, youth group or club.

For further information about Numana, or the Cowley County event, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/NumanaCowley or www.numanainc.com. Walk-ins are also welcome. Volunteers are asked to bring a canned good or non-perishable food item with them on the day of the event, which will be distributed to our local food pantries.
