Longview no match for No. 1-ranked Lady Tigers

With Longview Community College entering Thursday’s match at No. 1-ranked Cowley College with a record of 11-4, it appeared the Lady Lakers could present a challenge to the Lady Tigers. That turned out not to be the case as Cowley continued its dominance with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-14 victory.

The win was Cowley’s 19th in a row overall and 20th in a row at home. After needing to go four games in three of the team’s last four wins, Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner was pleased to see her team need only three games to defeat Longview.
“We talked a lot about focusing on the first three games so I was proud to see us get it done in three,” Bahner said.
Cowley got contributions from several players in the win. Sophomore Lindsey Chandler led the team with 12 kills, while Roslandy Acosta added 10 kills and 17 assists. Freshman Danika Maggard also played well and finished with eight kills.
“It was great to have Danika step up as a freshman and be a big part of the win,” Bahner said.
Kaitlin Stearns also factored in the win as she led the team with 14 digs and provided steady play the entire match.
“She does a great job of taking control of the backcourt,” Bahner said. “We can’t do anything without our backcourt defense.”
Cowley (19-2 overall) will look to run its winning streak to 20 matches in a row when they play host to Independence Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Pirates have struggled to a record of 2-11 overall and 1-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
“We have got to keep working to better ourselves and improve each day,” Bahner said. “I see great things for this team, we just can’t beat ourselves.”
