City Meeting

  1. JJ,

While there may be some merit in your thinking that you need to take advantage of that Grant Money or someone else will - ask yourself?

Does it resolve any of the following:

Does it provide an adequate income or any other reason to move or rent/buy a apt./house in AC?

Does it lower expenses, improve property values in AC? (Especailly in a period of falling values and rising prices for the standard cost of living!)

Does it improve or resolve any of the failing infrastructure issues of an aging community?
(Dirty water, streets, drainage, cosmetic values within the community?

Does it promote or encourage risk taking activities of or/by individuals, businesses or expand/attract new or exisiting industry?

I think we have lost sight of what stimulus should be or do and what is REAL GROWTH in the WHOLE AREA and across the Whole COUNTRY!

  2. Someone was asking about whether we get any benefit from being in a historic district. There are many grant programs available and no one from ark city applies....
Anyways, to answer the above questions concerning the bike trail

It improves overall quality of life, which does offer a reason for people to move here... When you move anywhere, the amenities are part of what goes into the choice..
    So definitely on this one

Could well improve property values, particularly those nearby.
    So again, YES

If it does attract more people to move here, then that means more money comning in on the tax roles.. so . yea, it does help with those issues.

Dont know about risk taking, but, it is one more plus when you are trying to attract business and industry. dont kid yourself, industry looks at things like what a town has to offer. choosing between ark cit yand a town in iowa ... walking trials might make the difference...

  3. Not so long ago! JJ tossed a trial ballon about
running for city commission. Think he just provided an advance answer, as to why not to vote
for him. Save your filing fee JJ.

  5. Let us not forget the "Little Mexico" vision! THAT is the kind of progress we can do without, thank you very much.

  6. Here is the point -

Recessions have a purpose besides making everyone miserable:

    They make us re-evaluate:

They are the end to some things and the potential for beginning new things and/or changing directions!

They allow for those who were priced out of a market/area/growth in rapid expansion periods to become competitive and get back in - although it maybe not be the same way or the same things! (You can't ride that same wave its gone!)

It allows for a period of reflection and correction and/or even the possibility of building/rebuilding a stronger base on which to build and for FUTURE GROWTH! (Someone/area loses and some other area GAINS!)

    Now to the naysayer part:

Cowley County's #1 employer is AIRCRAFT!

What are you going to replace those jobs with in the event they don't recover as quickly as most HOPE? What if they don't recover HERE at ALL?

    Please don't tell me RETAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am simply amazed at how people think - this area wants to grow it has the chemistry to do that - much better than other areas!

But the Leaders, Bankers, Economic developers to do it ARE NOT HERE! If they are they are not AWAKE or only want to funnel growth through their channels! (Sorry ACI that includes you!)

  7. @3:47,

Thank God I'm not the only one who remembers that. lol

Should JJ ever run for city council, that would be a pretty good argument against electing him.
