I got an email from Sean wallace, which has his response to all the events of the day, and the past few days concerning his guns.
There are some interesting observations.
I also added some comments from Mayor Jay Warren to the main story.
I am cleaning up the site a bit, the city page should like nicer and be more up to date now.
have a good weekend everyone.
You may read Wallace's comments here
Arkansas City will not be the focus now, but we can still talk about the town. For now the blog is a blog in search of an identity. Considering what the new niche will be.

Fishing column
Hey I just thought I would remind everyone that we now have a fishing column on the web site.
Hunting season is not far away, and I am sure it will go in that direction some in the fall.
Its not just about hunting and fishing though. It is also about our human relationship to the outdoors, to the wilderness, to nature, and even to animals.
Just posted the new one yesterday. I try to get it up there every thursday.
This is a local, Arkansas City, writer. This is the type thing I am looking for in columnists. People who can take on a subject and present good information.
I will post Dean Halls latest on the health page tomorrow

More on guns; play tonight
Two more updates on the site.
I put together a little story about just exactly what it is Chief Wallace wants to do as far as changing weaponry.
Also, there is a little piece about a play going on at the Landrush Museum. Tonight is the last night.
Read about both on the web site.

Guns, police and commissioners
I have finished a story about whether Commissioner Mell Kuhn over stepped his bounds as a city commissioner in his dealings with Police Chief Sean Wallace. I am more interested in the politics of the situation, and that is thrust of my story.
The whole story is on the site. I have also posted a memo from Wallace to City manager Steve Archer that explains the change Wallace wanted.
I have also posted on the site an email exchange between Kuhn, Archer and Wallace.
Two different commissioners gave me the emails, so I feel that makes them public record.
HERE IS THE LINK
Below is the beginning of my story.
The role of the city commission is to set policy, and it is the role of the city manager an department heads to carry out that policy.
At what point does a commissoner's involvement become micromanaging?
That seems to be the question in the latest controversy surrounding the city commission in Arkansas City.
Police Chief Sean Wallace, along with City Manager Steve Archer, recently made a decision to change weapons that police use, and changed how they would be maintained.
City Commissioner Mell Kuhn questioned the decision and made no secret of the fact that he did not agree.
See the full story here:
Also memo from Wallace outlining change he wanted, as well as emails between commissioners, Archer and Wallace.

Friday morning
The cop notes are posted.
I am thinking about only listing incidents, as some have suggested. That is a thought ive had in the past.
Anyone have any comments on that?
I am working on a story about the latest City Commission controversy. Police Chief Sean Wallace and Commissioner Mell Kuhn are at odds over what gun the police should be using.
The real controversy is Kuhn's involvement with the department head - who in this case is Wallace.
Some of the other commissioners feel he should not be doing that.
For his part, Kuhn says he has only talked with the city manager - Steve Archer - and that is the proper procedure.
Kuhn pointed out that Wallace sent him an email. He did not contact Wallace fist.
Which gun to use is a decision that will be made by the police chief under the guidance of the city manager. Kuhn feels he knows a good bit about guns, and should offer his input in this situation.
The story should be posted soon, keep checking back :)

First swine flu death reported in kansas
The first death in Kansas of a person infected with the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus has been confirmed by state and local public health officials, according to a press release from the Kansas Department of Health.
The death occurred in a middle-aged individual, who was identified as a Sedgwick County resident. The individual died from a chronic medical condition, but was also infected with the H1N1 virus. The illness was confirmed as H1N1 flu at the state public health laboratory on July 30.

Health care protests
Here is another national story.
Re-posted with permission from the AP.
Democrats are saying that protests against health care are being orchestrated by high-ranking republicans, insurance companies and other activists.
Does it matter who is behind the protests?
Are the protests based more on emotion than fact ?
Here is the link to the AP story, which I thought was a fair story.

Sotomayor confirmed
The Senate confirmed Sonia Sotomayor Thursday as the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court. The vote was 68-31 for Sotomayor.
Does anyone have any opinion on this?
Will this mean a more liberal shift to the high court?
Is there any chance at all that we could ever have a non-partisan appointment and confirmation?

Thursday update
Greetings everyone.
The cop notes will be posted soon. Now and then someone complains about the cop notes, but, it is the most widely read page on the site.
I had a really good interview with Tim Durham last night on the live blog. ByteDaily showed up, and asked some really good questions. The two of them had a good, respectful conversation, even though they were on different sides of the issues.
That is how debate should be.
Maybe we can have some live debates in the future.
You may still read the blog. In a day or two ill put it in the archives, but it will be available for a long time.
We are also getting ready to have some contests, and prizes. Patrick McDonald, of McDonald's Vacuum Center and used books, has provided some prizes for our site.
I will have more in another post later on. Basically, I would like to invite everyone to write a story for the web site. I will pick out what I think the best story is, and the winner will receive a car vacuum cleaner.
I am also trying to come up with some other sort of competition or contest as well.
Time is flying past. Hard to believe its Thursday already.
