the blog is back

The blog is back. Many people went over to the site. I will have to see if readership picks back up on here.
Cop notes are posted. I now have Winfield cop notes as well as Cowley County Sheriff notes on the site.
City commission worksession is this evening at 5:30.
One item that stands out is annexing Ark City Industries property along Skyline Drive to be used as a Tax Increment Finance district. This is an annexation for a "possible future TIF district."
This sets the state for a TIF, but does not create one.

  2. A bit off topic. But, I noticed a couple of nearby School Districts are considering combining. With Mr. Abrams saying more may be coming. I forsee many districts combining before the dust settles. How will this affect education? Don't want to bring it up, but it could save tons of $$ in salaries, buildings, etc., if it could be done effectively.

  3. Yea im going to be writing a lot more about that.
South Haven and Caldwell are pretty serious.
South Haven is also considering some other districts.
It has not been reported yet, but they have contacted Ark City schools. I dont have any word on whether AC is interested or not. They are also considering talking to Oxford and Wellington.
Id bet on SH and Caldwell hooking up though, that makes the most sense.
Consolidations need not result in closing any schools. Mostly just combine administrations.

  4. I think the thing about Education that is the most disturbing is that it is more than 50% of the States Budget!

  5. Why is that disturbing?
According to the constitution, the state is supposed to provide for public education and provide a militia.
Everything else is stuff that has been added.

  6. Yeah, it really torks me up that we are spending so much on our children's future. I'd much rather use the money to build coliseums and sports areanas. Heck, $4500 dollars per kid per year?
Why not just put that money aside, and give each kid $50,000 dollars at age 18? Or better yet, put $50,000 into an interest bearing account that they cant touch until age 18?

  7. On a much more serious note.
I just thought of this while posting the last comment.

Why doesn't the federal government deposit $5000 into an interest bearing account upon the birth of every us citizen. That account wouldn't be touchable until age 65. It would be quite a substantial amount by then? Wouldn't that be a fix to our Social Security problems? Die before 65, the money goes into an account to pay survivor benefits...

    Why wouldn't this work?

  9. Three reasons
    It makes too much sense.
    would be to easy.
It would work, thus leaving politicians with nothing to do.
Its like the federal bailout. If you gave every person in the usa $100,000 instead, you would save money and kickstart the economy.
There's just no one in government thinking creatively.

  10. Also, rather than totally revamping health care, why not give doctors an incentive to work at free clinics for those who don't have insurance. I would imagine there would be lots of doctors who would take advantage. Perhaps some kind of tax credit?

Or, pay for medical education in return for service at free clinics for a period of time.

Again, it makes too much sense, and no one would line their pockets off the idea....

  11. I am glad you put the blog back on site. One of the reasons I come to this site is to get local news AND be able to discuss it. That was something you offered that others didn't. Probably a good move to put the blog back up.

ditto. I think we had a flat tire for a few days there. eh. But, flat fixed. On the road again. Some people on here have some really good ideas. I like the poster's input who posted on the one above about schools & taxes.

  13. Flat tire is a good analogy.
    Readers are slowly coming back.
Help spread the word that we're back.
