New Bulldog Stadium

Here are a couple pictures from the Snake Dance Friday evening at the Arkansas City High School. This is the preseason ritual held each year as school starts. They had food and then the football team had a scrimmage. After the scrimmage people were able to walk out on the new field.
This was all held at the new stadium.
It does look very nice. They dont have the pressbox up yet and there are a few things here and there to be finished, but it still looks good.
One big difference you will see at football games this year is the parking. The new stadium has a big parking lot, so that will make it a lot easier.
Lighting will be better. Modern bathrooms and a nice entry way. The field itself looked sharp with lines painted and theres a bulldog logo at midfield.
Your tax dollars at work.

  2. this town has established a pretty good reputation for accomplishments in tennis, but they stuff the 'new' courts over in a corner, lumped them all together with no landscaping in between every couple of courts which would also allow better spectator access.

  3. Must be going to add "rowing" to our sports venue.
Lots of water standing at the North end of the new stadium?

  4. I am not sure I will ever understand how wise we have become. $30mm in buildings and not a dime for teachers?

I know there are people who argue that teachers make too much. Most of those voices are from people who have no children in public school or from people who have children but invest very little of their own time and/or money in them.

But, let's see how well buildings and ball fields can teach kids. If it were that easy we could skip all this and just mail books to the house. Then you have it all. Text books, a building and no teacher in the room and all for less, instead of more money.

  5. I always thought teachers did it for the kids?

Just curious, how much do you think teachers should make?

  6. The teacher...puts up with unruly kids.... no real backup from the parents.... hands tied by the government and the school system.
The administration... they are not suffering... they are not sitting in the classroom...
The parent.... well, they all just have the perfect children.
Who got the money? Not the teachers... and that's pitiful.
    Who's complaining.... folks like 8/30/2010 @ 4:09...
Are you working to make a living for your family, or even just for yourself (if you're single) I bet you never ask for a raise...HA!!!
The administration is getting PAID! The classrooms may be beautiful, the buildings may be great....
Give the pay to the ones who go in the classrooms with their hands tied behind their backs by government, and yet still give their all to teach the children.

  7. From the hill.com Today:

"Increased funding for Medicaid is likely to result in less funding for education," Heineman wrote last week to state education groups, Bloomberg reported. "Don't sit on the sidelines. I strongly urge you to support the repeal of the recently enacted federal health care law."

Earlier in the month, Heineman's office released figures estimating the reform law's Medicaid expansion — set to take effect in 2014 — will cost Nebraska between $526 million and $766 million during the next 10 years. The projections are much higher than those crunched by analysts at the Kaiser Family Foundation, who estimate the state costs to come in between $106 million and $155 million during the same span.

(By contrast, Kaiser estimates the federal government will pay between $2.3 billion and $2.7 billion to expand Medicaid coverage in the state.)

The tug-of-war between health and education is nothing new to the states-- Medicaid and school funding are consistently the two most expensive budget items nationwide.

Indeed, in the recent Capitol Hill battle over emergency Medicaid funding, many states had warned Congress that a failure to provide the money would result in thousands of teacher lay-offs.

  8. My 2 cents. I was on the citizen committee that voted for the updating of school facilities. It seemed like we had no choice. i.e., the facilities were aging rapidly. The computers & network were ancient. (amazing that they were able to run on the stuff they had) Security was practically a myth. I could go on & on. Couple that with the fact that above 50% of the upgrades will be reimbursed by the State (provided they still have money by then) jk. Who knew that all He** was going to break loose in the world economy. We didn't. Hindsight still lets me say of all we could have voted, we did the best thing.
I for one believe teachers are the most underpaid people in the world. They are the unsung heroes of our time. But, the system is made so that we could not vote to increase teacher pay. 2 different things entirely. A poster mentioned Administrative wages. touche'. It is in my mind, unconscionable. (As most corporate settings are) But, then...it's not up to me.

Let us hope that now townspeople will take a bit more pride and come out to games to support. The classrooms are all cool/warm whichever the need. The buildings are secure. The Computer network is state of the art. Please consider being a volunteer here and there. Ark City is my home. I live here.

  9. Am I missing something? Weren't our property taxes raised to give raises to teachers? You think teachers are underpaid, try raising a family on a cops salary. Officers risk their lives every day but don't get paid nearly as much as teachers.

  10. Teachers can change jobs just like any other disgruntled employee. I think they all (should) know going into it that your not going to get rich by being a teacher.

And NO, not everyone is getting raises in this economy. Most people are just lucky to have a job and to keep what they have.

I do believe that some teachers are good with our kids and go above and beyond. They probably do deserve a raise. But the one complaining on here doesn't strike me as one of those teachers. You should find something else more rewarding if you are that unhappy...you're sounding a little bitter.

I also don't believe the School Admin. needs to make the big bucks that they do. It would be better to give the teachers a little more.

  11. I haven't had a raise in over two years, but I'd bet a weeks pay that those aren't the only pics of young girls on JJ's computer.

  12. @3:51 LOL.. "risk their lives everyday..." Maybe in Metro D.C., or Chicago. Not in good ol Arkansas City. Have you seen these guys??? Those guys spend 99 of 100 days on patrol. Hoping to catch a DUI or occasional speed trap. Teachers on the other hand...up to the neck in alligators all day, every day.

  13. Every day an officer goes to work, they have the potential to encounter a lethal situation. They train for that, and they accept that. Any call could be the one where they are shot at. Just because it does not happen every day around here does not mean it cannot happen on the next call. The danger of becoming complacent makes it even more dangerous. For them to make less than teachers is wrong. Many times they have just as much education as most teachers. Most officers have a bachelors degree, or at least an associates degree, and they are required to get continuing education all year every year. They should get paid more is all I'm saying. ACPD pays pretty well, but officers starting out at $14/hr is still not as good as most teachers around here.

  14. $14. hr is a living wage. (If you budget) Hey, all I'm saying is I take issue with the "risk their lives everyday" comment. I know better. Maybe in war-torn inner city Chicago or somewhere, but around here...being an officer is a cake-walk. Drive down Summit & see how many Patrol cars you pass in 4 miles. It's ridiculous. Heaven help you if you happen to have a tail or headlight go out, because they don't have anything else to do. I'm done with this line. If you want to think these guys are "risking their lives everyday"...then..help yourself. Try being a teacher for 1 year in elementary or H.S.

  15. I have been both, and being a teacher does not even compare to being an officer when it comes to stress and danger. Kids don't shoot at you or try to fight you when you tell them to do something they don't want to do. At least not very often.

  16. Reality check. When was the last time a police officeer was shot at in Arkansas City. Lets answer that before we use the cliche argument of risking lives every day.

So too do oil field workers or off shore rig workers - anyone recall the front of the BP oil leak? 11 people (labeled as overpaid) lost their lives.

Let's see. Who else. Well, I think a few basketball players have died in competition. Football player, especially in high school have died in competition.

And then revisit Columbine et al and argue that there is not life hazard in public schools. They shot at teachers AND students long before any officer put their life on the line. Thank goodness the officers showed up. They kept MORE teachers from being killed (oops I meant to say unarmed and underpaid techers).

Back to the orignal question: Who recalls incidents of local police officers being caught in the line of fire - gun fire that is. There have actually been more of them caught diddling some woman to whom they weren't married - including at the high school.

There's a risk.... an irate husband, or worse yet, an irate teen's parent.

My suggestion: let's reserve a seating section for anonymous bloggers at the new stadium and every one of them attend the season opener and sit together and discuss these issues during the first home ballgame.

    What say ye?

  17. let's compare the number of officers killed every year throughout history to the number of teachers killed and see if your argument holds any water. They are not compareable. Officers have a dangerous job. Teachers do not. Yes, there is stress involved with both, but far more for an officer in a dangerous situation. Officers around here have been shot at, and many have been in deadly situations. You obviously know nothing of which you speak. Most people who don't know any better think that officers in small town do nothing, but there are those of us who know the truth because we have dealt with it first hand. Anyone who hasn't is just talking to hear themselves talk, not actually debating.

  18. @6:21 ROTFLMAO.....LOL x2 ...........@8:39 "Officers have a dangerous job. Teachers do not." .......It's a good thing you're anonymous. You're making yourself look bad. These Officers in A.C. got it made. The only time they fire their weapon is on the range. Most of them are so out of shape they can't run a 40 yard dash, let alone get involved in a tussle. No worries, we live in Arkansas City. I don't think that's gonna be a problem. All you gotta do is drive, turn on the lights and write.

  19. 10:59, your ignorance is showing. You obviously have no idea what these officers are called to do, and what they have to prepare themselves for, both physically (there are no fatties on the PD anymore, unlike 20 years ago) and mentally. You have no idea what is takes to mentally prepare yourself to take another person's life. That is something that every officer must do, so when the time comes they can act to save a life by taking one. I have seen officers shot at. I have fought with men twice my size, and men whacked out of their minds on drugs. I have kicked in many meth lab doors. I have saved lives. And I did it for very low pay. Low enough that my family would have qualified for food stamps, even though we were too proud to get them. Just because those things don't happen every day does not mean they do not happen.

  20. I sure hope the teacher on here complaining doesn't teach one of my children. How uneducated are you? Got get another job and quit complaining.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I read this and find myself amused. We attack the teachers, we attack the pd, we attack one another.

To the folks that don't know what teachers are putting up with, in the classroom,in order to teach the children of our community. - You have no idea what you're talking about. All teachers may not be at risk.... but enough of them are. They should've gotten the raise. They deserve it.

To the ones who think that our pd is 'risking' their life everyday... Ok... if traffic violations and talkin on their cells are... I almost got hit at a corner cause one of 'em was on a cell, and decided to 'cut' the corner short. If I woulda known 'who' he was, or got the car number, I woulda turnt him in. But I was a little busy thanking God that I was a split second from the corner. Anyhow... yeh they risk they life.... but like you said... they the ones that signed up for it. They can change jobs anytime they want, their problem is that they will have to find someone to hire them with the 'bully' attitudes. Again, we do have some good officers here in AC, but we got some... that let's just say... ughhhhhhhhh! Barney Fife......

this thread is getting funnier by the comments.
