Interesting article, paranoia

Here is an article from The National Review about politics, paranoia and short memories.

Liberals may want to act like Tea Partiers have brought a new kind of crazy into American politics, but according to the National Review's Rich Lowry, anyone who thinks so has a pretty short memory. Wasn't it just a few years ago that liberals were wringing their hands over the decline of civil liberties under the Bush administration? Didn't the Patriot Act inspire a great deal of the-end-is-nigh rhetoric from the left?

  3. Finally, this on Socialism. Socialist party leaders say, "To be honest, the most socialist candidate in the 2008 election was Sarah Palin."

When you have a little free time, this becomes easy.

  5. I believe the Tea Party folks are average Americans. Albeit, probably a tad better off financially. This is good. They are around 45-55 yrs old. Old enough to know that you cannot spend money you don't have. Old enough to have started businesses, raised children and old enough to care. Look, these folks retirements are set. They are genuinely concerned about their children & grandchildren and their country. Patriotic. Unfortunately that patriotism has been vilified, demeaned and marginalized by the MSM. No more. They have their attention. Now this, Pres. Clinton comes out with his "you can't cross the line" cr@p. Give me a break. Breathe D.Q., Breathe....

  6. Yeah, I read the article too!
They did say they they were diappointed that Obama didn't go with the single payer plan!
They are card carrying Socialist in the U.S.!
They referenced Social Security and other programs as Socialist Programs - like we didn't already know that?
The problem with those programs is they are broke! Robbed of their money and replaced with IOU's. If they hadn't robbed them they could have discontinued them and started new ones!
Now it is the responsibility of future generations to keep funding them until they either get to the point they can't be sustained or they raise the retirment age to the point fewer people can collect!
The problem with Socialist is they have no back up plan when their plans fail!
Keep your eye on Greece and Europe!
The very things that are happening there could happen here in a relative short time!
    California is probably our Greece!
Their reference to Sarah Palin was about the taxing of the Oil Companies!
Gee, the oil reserves belong to Alaska - you would think they deserve some income off the very resources they own as a State!
But, then as Socailist it all belongs to the Federal Government! Right?
    Wrong !!!!!!
The thing that gets me most about Socialist?
Is that when they can't make their plan work say in their state! They want to look somewhere else for the money to keep their failed plans going! (Look at the welfare situation and unemployment in California?)
Kind of sounds like illegal immigration, Sub-prime lending, the auto industry, Healthcare and a few other programs don't you think?
The only problem is they are passing debt on to the future generations - theives who are steeling their kids and grandkids futures!

Now just in case you don't think there is a National Debt? Those people who we owe that money will be glad to remind Us!

Just lobbed a few cruise missles as warnings then when Bush got elected they saw the opportunity to strike an unsuspecting country!
Who knew there were sleepers within our borders?
How do we know they aren't here now?

    And

  10. Speaking of tea parties and no more taxes. I hope the folks in Kansas are sleeping good tonight. KDOC is cutting the sexual predator contract to evaluate these dangerous criminals, due to budget cuts. Gives me warm fuzzy feelings knowing we saved some money. So where should the line be drawn on budget cuts? I don't like the idea of raising taxes anymore than the next guy, but is it worth making such deep cuts and putting our children in danger like that? 11. Tea parties aren't about "no more taxes". They are about fair taxation and an out of control government. If the government would cut spending it would help a great deal. 47% of Americans don't even pay any taxes, and 40% get money from the government. People need to pull their own weight and not be dependent on the government.

Spending is simply outrageous. Education gets 65% of our states resources. How's it workin for us?
I'm not out to deny education... but somewhere down the line, can they give up 5%.... heaven forbid... we need all the equipment, teaching tools we can get our hands on.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I personally feel we're spending so much on education because a lot of parents aren't helping their own children and the school having to do what the parents should be doing at home.
I understand alot of politicians want to keep their campaign promises of not rai sing taxes, but where do we draw the line? Wait until another child is going to be molested and murdered? Is it worth it ?
SG, I'm curious how you feel about raising sales tax?

  16. "SG, I'm curious how you feel about raising sales tax?"

I am on board with the Fair Tax. I have done some reading on it, and so far, it seems like a brilliant idea. Everybody pays their fair share. A person who is well off, and buys fancy toys will pay more for the tax on those items, and a person who is poor can pay very little taxes if they live within their means. I still have some research to do, but like I said.. so far I'm sold.

Obama, on the other hand, wants the Value Added Tax (VAT) like every other socialist country.

47% don't pay income tax. They certainly pay sales tax, estate taxes, inheritance tax, etc. etc. etc...

Who do you think should be paying more taxes. The 95% that control 5% of the wealth, or the 5% that control 95% of the wealth? I say let those that have the money pay the taxes....

    ReplyDelete
  18. In contrast, the FairTax dramatically improves economic growth and wage rates for all, but especially for lower-income families and individuals. In addition to receiving the monthly FairTax prebate, these taxpayers are freed from regressive payroll taxes, the federal income tax, and the compliance burdens associated with each. They pay no more business taxes hidden in the price of goods and services, and used goods are tax free.

How can the FairTax generate lower net tax rates for everyone and still pay for the same real government expenditures? The answer is two-fold. Firstly, the tax base is dramatically widened by including consumer spending from the underground economy (estimated at $1.5 trillion annually), and by including illegal immigrants, those who escape their fair share today through loopholes and gimmicks. In addition, 40 million foreign tourists a year will become American taxpayers as consumers here. Secondly, not everyone's average net tax burden falls. For households whose major economic resource is accumulated wealth, the FairTax will deliver a net tax hike compared to the current system.

Consider, for example, your typical billionaire, of which America now has more than 400. These fortunate few are invested primarily in equities on which they pay taxes at a 15 percent rate, whether their income comes in the form of capital gains or dividends. In addition to having the income from their wealth taxed at a low rate, the principal of their wealth is completely untaxed either directly or indirectly. Assuming they and their heirs spend only the income earned on the wealth each year, the tax rate today is 15 percent. In contrast, under the FairTax, the effective tax rate is 23 percent. Hence, the very wealthy will pay more taxes when the FairTax is enacted. In a nutshell, those who spend more will pay more but low, moderate and middle income taxpayers will benefit from the greatest gains in reduced tax liabilities.

  19. I say let those that have the money pay the taxes....

You see you want to only focus on the rich!
Who for various reasons have assets or working capital and wealth that is measured in money!
But, that $1.5 trillion underground economy and bringing in taxes from Visitors?
Makes my eyes POP wide open!
The Fair Tax is a better Mousetrap!
Plus, it's returning the power to the States and Individuals?
It will have more benefit and produce longer lasting results which can turn things around faster! Than any redistribution of wealth program they can produce at the Federal level!
It would make us an immediate viable competitor in the World!
Why in the world when we can see with our own eyes what Socialist Countries has used for answers to their problems? (Like a VAT tax, Socailized Medicine etc.)
Do we want to use same answers here in the U.S.A.?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sounds good to me.
The sales tax would have to go up quiet a bit wouldnt it?
But that might be ok, if the other taxes went away.

    ReplyDelete
  21. All illegals and foreign tourists would be paying part of our tax bill (as they paid the national sales tax).

Furthermore, businesses would be inclined to stay (or start up) in the U.S.A. because of no taxes. If you want an economic/manufacturing boom, this would do it.

The IRS would be obsolete and tax season wouldn't exist.

  23. What is the FairTax plan?
The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.

The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 296) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

Except, and this bothers us working class dems more than the GOPs, it would decrease the tax burden on high income earners and increase it on the middle class.
And a consumption tax of this size would be extremely difficult to collect, and would lead to pervasive tax evasion. The proposed sales tax rate would raise less revenue than the current tax system, leading to an increased budget deficit.

It's blatantly obvious you are only getting your info from one source. Love the way "repeal amendments" rolls off your lips so easily, as you decry nearly everything our president does as unconstitutional.

I believe that is probably propoganda by the opposing group who of course want to be or at least mimic Socialist!

    From your article:

Not really it was Socialist saving their own Social Programs on who corrupt capitalists made a killing!

Read the recent news about the Banks who are being charged with fraud!
They simply were betting against (the riskiest loans) the very instruments they were selling as solid investments!

That wouldn't have happened if the investment banks and hadn't been allowed to merge under the Clinton adminsitration!

The Unions (UAW, NEA etc.) were left in POWER!

The corrupt Politicians were left IN POWER!

True Capitalism would have let them fall (fail) through the floor and into the basement!

Then there would be other parties rush in to pick up the pieces and new opportuinties would have risen from that pile of DUST!

At the end of the year their deductions for children etc. allow them to get far more back than they paid into the tax system!

Oh, there is plenty of money to go around without printing more. I just wish people were paid what the are worth, and that the wealthy didn't exploit the poor and middle class to get where they are. It is the common laborer, and the janitors, and the dish washers, and the migrant farm workers that are the back bone of this country. They at least should be able to afford groceries, health care and perhaps a modest vacation. Bill Gates would still have more money than God if he paid his workers a living wage.n

Sure the poor do not have the same opportunities as the wealthy. We also must figure out our priorities. Why pay someone 30,000,000 to hit a ball with a stick, 15,000,000 to make a movie, or 10's of millions to record a record and even more to go on tour. This while there are hungry people eating out of garbage cans behind our ballparks, theaters, and concert halls.

So, who should lead the way to correct this situation? The Government?
With their very disincentives make it more profitable to depend on them for healthcare and food and then you are penalized if you try to get ahead through loss of benefits!
I think it is interesting to see the Gates Foundation and even Oprah spending money from their massive fortunes over seas! Battling preventable disease and helping in countries where there is little to no hope with Governments to corrupt to care and that don't have malpractice laws or Lawyers!
Maybe the are planting seeds of hope?

Well I once heard that as much as half of the food is thrown away because of waste or spoilage!
But it can't be given away to the poor for fear someone might get sick! Who would profit from that? But they can eat it from the trash and no one cares?

Should a thug ball player make more than a teacher, or a fireman, or a brain surgeon? Seriously?
From your perspective there are thousands if not more teachers than ball players who make multi-million dollar salaries!
They aren't worth that money to me! But there time to shine is short and there is always someone(s) waiting to replace them - where else but in America could they go from Public Housing to a Penthouse! Then often they can't manage their wealth and end up broke! (Full circle)

  56. Well fisrt we have become a consumer and service econonmy - the fair tax would capatilize on consumer spending!
Second the fair tax would put money back into the hands of people through tax relief and act much like stimulus checks because everyone who gets a paycheck would not have money deducted for Federal taxes!
Third, the tax revenue collected would be more
continuous flow of money. It would be a more real time system and wouldn't have the same effect that tax season has on consumer spending! It would even the spikes and troughs caused by refunds and payments!
Fourth, it would reduce the cost of Government! You woudn't have a redundancy of programs where the State and Federal Government are funding and providing the same service! Colleting taxes! (They'll hate that one!)
Fifth, It would help with the tax evasion problem and everyone would be contributing based on their ability and conmsuption patterns! It might even reduce prices through providing lower operating costs to businesses and indutry!
Sixth, It would be beneficial to rebuilding the manufacturing base in the U.S. You wouldn't be taxing the businesses or the corporations!
You would be taxing their owners through their consumption patterns!

Fianlly, why wouldn't you want to collect taxes from everyone? Then realize that at the lowest levels they will not actually be paying tax up to the poverty level!

The ones who will want to fight it probably aren't the ones you think! It will be all those who make their living from the current tax system Private and Public! IMHO!

In Europe one of the biggest obsatacles to them accepting the Euro Dollar was the people who made their money calculating currency rates between countries! But, because of that system it was difficult to do business between countries because the cost were always subject to the ever changing currency rates!

  57. Btw: There is one little problem I left out!

Who could you tust with all that money that could be "FAIR".

We would probably have to find them on another Planet!

But for now if you want to see things return to something like the OLD AMERICA!
Its going to take some real AMERICANS who still believe in CAPITALISM!

  58. "The only people who ought to fear the kind of oversight and transparency that we're proposing are those whose conduct will fail this scrutiny," he said.

Obama ended his speech by quoting a Time magazine article quoting bankers saying if reform passes it will be a disaster.

Then he pointed out that the article was from the 1930s -- during the fight over creation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Here is a except from Obama's speech on Financial reform! I do believe in the role of Government as a referee in competition!
Who wants to compete in a sport where the rules are made up as the game proceeds or by a official who plays favorites?
But, it should be the competitors who determine the winners and not the referees!
The only way Capitalism really fails is through outside interference/intervention!
(It fleshes out the fat and waste, it always makes things justify their purpose/value, it always is looking to do things cheaper/better, justify its quality, make it more efficient, faster or ends up replacing it altogther with something entirely different!)
That happened with the Auto Industry and The Banks! Government intervention allowed them to get to that point through legisltion, incentives
    and/or subsidies!
Without that wrong type of involvment provided by Government they would have FAILED LONG AGO and much smaller!

    AND

Without the impact of effecting the whole country!

    THEN

The Healthcare industry can't compete TODAY because it is controlled by too many Government Social Programs!

No thanks! It would probably trigger an Audit!

    Then

I might have to hitch a ride to Mexico with JJ!

    You do it for me!

But in reality which ever side of the decimal point you put that ZERO on that's probably all they can get out of me!

Its really coming down to what kind of country you want to leave for the future generations! I hope its about Capatilism and Freedom!

Considering this might be the first generation to leave the future ones in worse shape then they inherited it!

The ones I most disappointed in - are the ones from the "Summer of Love"! I was real young but remember how they were agianst the Veitnam War!
How Unconditional "LOVE" was going to change the World!
    It sure has!

  62. Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants.

Many argue the bill promotes racial profiling and will lead to civil rights abuses. The head of the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, condemned the legislation, calling it mean-spirited and wondering whether Arizonans would revert to "German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques" of turning people into authorities based on suspicions.

This is from and article on Yahoo where Mc Cain is changing (supposedly) his position on illegal immigrants!

When do you suppose they will get around to calling it an "invasion" of Mexican Poverty on an already weakened American economy!

Seems they have plenty of supporters!

I think Arizonan's are about to take things
    into their own hands!

    But

    Wait till Obama declares Amnesty!

  63. Problem with a national sales tax is that the poor spend a greater percentage of their income on purchases. They do not have disposable income, or money just sitting around in banks. What they have, they have to spend. Thus, 100% of their income is taxed. Not so with the wealthy.

The only fair way to deal with this is to have a transaction tax. Do away with the IRS, and Income tax. Tax every monetary transaction. Each time anything is bought or sold, a small percentage of that transaction is taxed. Both the seller and the purchaser pay. This will make sure that both the producer and the consumer share the burden.

  64. @3:34 sounds good too (i'm sold) i think you should send a copy to the white house, congress and the irs.

have you heard the latest? now they're floating a trial balloon of VAT tax. forget cutting spending. let's add tax to every item we buy or sell. they're pretty much admitting that the stimulus and spending they've imposed on us have not worked. deficits spiraling out of control. it's like we got a bunch of teenagers running the government. now they come for more money from an already overtaxed population. Plus, looks like Topeka is about to put more tax on us.

Well that comes when you have leadership that doesn't understand true Capatilism! They don't understand what drives it or its advantages over Socialism and Communism?
Then because they don't understand their own form of Government?
They want to immulate something else!
All those programs they are proposing will act as disincentives!
    For indivduals
    For businesses and Industry
    For the States
The power shift will be towards BIGGER and more controlling Government!
(Wait till they turn the IRS loose on collecting taxes!)
They will know whats best and have all the answers! (Gee, we tried everything else and this is the best thing for everyone!)

    And unless someone stops them?

Welcome to the New World Order of Socialist
    and Communist!

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

How can you say that they will be taxed on 100% of their income when only new goods or services are taxed! No taxes on used items!

Who is buying the majority of the new items?

Then there is a prebate for those making up to the poverty level! They pay no Federal Taxes!

  67. James, please put up a couple more posts so this revolving door can go away.

    It's more than fair - yeah?For who - it's a Fair Tax - no it isn't - it's very fair, here's a cut-n-paste why - I'm not reading that - too many spaces between sentences - it is fair
