big -12 doomed ?

The Texas blogger, orangebloods.com, is reporting the demise of the Big 12.
Speculaton has been rampant in recent days about realignment of the major conferences. Orangebloods says Nebraska is set to go to the Big 10, and that the Pac 10 is set to offer several big 12 schools invitations. That includes Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, as well as Texas and some others.
It should all come to a head Friday.
Here is the story

Does anyone care about this?
I just cant imagine Okie State being in the same conference with UCLA, Oregon State and all that.
Its all about the money of course, but they might be killing the goose that laid the golden egg, making conferences pretty much meaningless.

Rumor in the east has it that the SEC is after Florida State and Virginia Tech, and maybe Texas.

  1. From the last paragraph on your article:

    GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION?

It has been expressed to Orangebloods.com by a top collegiate executive that any movement toward four, 16-team super conferences will be met with resistance by Congress.

The executive said that could be bad news for college athletics because Congress has already taken some cursory looks at the fact athletic departments enjoy a tax-exempt status as part of their universities.

The executive said if it appears the rich are getting richer in college athletics, there will be a hard look at whether to take away the tax exempt status of athletic departments.

"And it won't just be Orin Hatch (a member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee from Utah and longtime BCS critic) looking into this," the source said.

    Stay tuned.

  2. There should be no tax exempt status for college athletics. It has nothing to do with education. it is big business, and it is entertainment. Many are getting wealthy, with little or no benefit to the educational aspect of the university.

  3. I used to love Major League Baseball! I went to KC every chance I had to watch them play!
(of course that was when they had a contender)
When the players went on strike and they cancelled the World Series? I was done with baseball and have since moved to NASCAR!
College sports with all its money won't be too far behind the Majors in buying their talent!
Too bad for the sports - I guess I'll have to move on to Soccer, tennis or horseshoes!

  4. I cannot stand college sports. If as much emphasis was put on education as is put on how to recruit the best player, our children would be smarter and our future would be brighter. Most of the big time college athletes can't even spell c.o.l.l.e.g.e.

  5. UT and A&M to Big 10, OU to SEC. Book it and hire me to do sports. (Colorado to PAC10 too)

  6. And how does Colorado celebrate its admission to the Pac 10? By losing five scholarships for failing to meet the NCAA academic progress standards.

The cost of attending the newest Big Ten school, the University of Nebraska, has just increased 6%. So, for those not playing football, those animal husbandry and corn growing classes are gonna be quite pricey.
