Library dream

Arkansas City Public Library Director Dalene Hawthorne has some big ideas for the library. They are so big they might have to move the library from East Fifth Avenue to Summit Street.
She is hoping to launch a major building project that will cost well about $1.5 million, but should result in a very nice library facility for the city.
She would like to have a computer room, a community room for meetings, comfortable seating and a coffee shop.
The library circulated 84,000 items in 2009 and averages 230 visitors a day. The library gets crowded at times, and it would be good to have more room in general, she said.
To get involved, call her at the library, 442-1280.

  1. I hope the city supports her. She is good for the city, and this is a pretty good idea from what I know of it right now. But we aren't very good at supporting change usually. This would fill a building that will be hard to fill (its big!).

  2. One very real concern about moving the library to the old Foster's building......PARKING! Where will people park? That block is almost always congested with parked vehicles. Will the city condemn neighboring properties so they can build more parking lots? Just wondering.
