Tuesday morning

Cop notes are posted, and there is a short police story on the site.
Nothing gets people going like the TIF argument. I am curious as to where the supporters are though. They need to speak up.
But its still a long way off and may not happen. What the commission is doing is trying to set up an area that would be attractive to a new business. That could be a TIF, and it might not. It could be a local person.
Im wondering if a local person started a business out there, would there still be the same opposition?
Remember the opposition to the hospital? Now that its coming in under budget, you dont hear as much complaining.

  1. James,

Heres why so many people are against the TIF. 2 of the commissioners who are making the decision on it stand to gain financially. If they didnt, you might not have this public unrest that is going on.

  2. gain financially how? Are they buying the property? Are they opening a new business or industry? Are they bringing in new retail? What are these 2 commissioners doing that is going to be a gain, and if they do gain in bringing what we need who cares? The whole idea in business is to get ahead. As long as we get what we need who cares? If it isn't someone locally it will be someone outside of town. Either way, someone will gain. Grow up

  3. They will gain at the expense of the taxpayers!
The hospital was a necessity the old one was
to the point that something had to be done!
Sure it could have been rebuilt or remodeled or built on another site!
But the free land and location helped to a make
    that decision!
It is a for profit hospital and remains to be seen how that works out! But, its also something that at some point everyone will need!
ACI is already working to get its hands on that project too!
If there is additional expansion on that complex who gets to compete for that or will it be an inside deal?

I think you would have the same responses going on regardless.
If a company wanted to come in here, and wanted to give the city a million dollars extra just for the privilege of coming, and gave every citizen a thousand dollars and a year's worth of free product.
there would be the same complaints.
People who are against progress are against progress period. it doesnt matter what it is or how it happens.

  5. Really, you don't think that within your own business community that there are people who would expand or rise to the challenge of meeting demands of the Public? Who would open a shoe store or expand their lumber yard if it could be made profitable and competitive?

The question is not who's against progress, but what kind of progress and who benfits and who loses!

The QUESTION is do you want to build it locally or let someone from outside build it!

  6. Maybe it should be put like this:

YOU WANT TO SPEND BIG so you can buy cheap!

  7. Its simple ACI owns the land. If the city goes in and puts in sewer and water lines and streets, then the value of the land goes up. ACI can then rent out or sale that land for far more than they are able to right now. If ACI didnt have commissioners on the board we wouldnt be talking about this TIF. But they do, hats off to them they have found a way to use local government to pad the pockets. They arent the first or the last. Its just something we have to deal with since we are dumb enough to put said commissioners in power.
