new hunting and fishing column

I have just posted the latest hunting and fishing column from Thomas Stalnaker. I will be putting more pictures on that page later on, so check back.
below is an exerpt from his column. I completely agree with it, what do you think?

Arkansas City is very much a Mecca for sportsmen, I am truly surprised there is not more promotion for sportsmen in the area, I guess it goes along with the local attitude towards the river recreation as well; it is quite depressing to see a city that cannot see the benefits in this type of promotion.

  1. I don't mind the killing of Deer, Game Birds, trapping, or even the predators like Coyotes!
But, there is a difference in true hunting as a sport and its commercialization as a business!
If you haven't noticed there is a big trend towards land owners leasing their land to hunting groups or individuals who act as guides!
I talked to an indivdual who owned several thousand acres to the East. He was one of the last people who I thought would sell out to commercial hunting. He said he couldn't pass up the kind of money that a group from Nebraska was offering him for the right to hunt his land!
There is a difference betweeen the true hunters and fishemen who respect and appreciate Nature and the weekend warriors!
Ask some of the farmers and ranchers!

  2. What is missed in the above post is that people relocate to other areas where they do not know any local farmers or land owners.
Comercilization is good for both the hunter and the animals as well as the land owners.

Gone are the days of Billy Bob loading up his cooler full of beer and toteing his shot gun along cruiseing country roads in search of a Pheasent.

if it wasnt for orgainised Hunting there would be no funds to fight congress and liberal democrats who wish to close public hunting and take your gun.

Hunting is big business, where it is promoted Hotels , Motels , cafe's and general business has a alot to gain, most hunters are not shy about spending what it cost to enjoy the sport.

These are not the drunken whiskey toteing hunters of yeasteryear, we have lawyers , Doctors, Judges, Congressmen, Nurses, very proffesional people who enjoy the sport and have paid a dear price to clean up the riff raff associated with it.

Wake up America times are changeing some for the better some for the Liberal worse but in any case when the broom sweeps the whineing Democrats out of the path there is a free Republic beneath that keeps America United

Wrong! It is the fees that are charged by the state that provide the funds for the fish and game. Those paid by every fisherman and hunter!
    Even on leased land!
I agree that there are sportsman both within and outside the area who practice bad sportmanship when hunting!
But, the wild game doesn't belong to those with the money or even to the landowner!
They can however permit or deny access on their land!
I like the fact that the state does designate
public hunting grounds and I don't disagree with the landowners rights to lease their land!
What landowner would pass up a paycheck for hunting wild game on his property? It might just pay his taxes for the year maybe more!
But, Who really makes all the big money?

  4. I think you missed his point, he never said fee's didnt pay for fish and game, what he said was orgainised hunting groups pay for attorneys and litigation that keeps these rights and traditions possible.

if it takes a landowner allowing hunting to pay his taxs, his managment skills of his land are surly a sorry affair

  5. I cant imagine why anyone would think it was wrong for someone to let hunters hunt on their land for a fee.
    Why would that be wrong.
Maybe they shouldn't sell their wheat either :)

actually, arkansas city is missing huge opportunities, and hunting and fishing is just one of them.

  6. You are the ones who missed the point!
All to often - when it comes to making prvil
edges ALL ABOUT MONEY - it ends up the people with money have the prvileges!
There is nothing wrong with what their doing!

    BUT,

I think we can see where the big money goes:

what he said was orgainised hunting groups pay for attorneys and litigation that keeps these rights and traditions possible.

    AND

The fact that a good Head mount can go for a
few thousand right on up in price!

  8. I hunt on private land owned by local people, and I have never paid a cent. I don't see anything wrong with land owners making money off of hunters and guides though. More power to them. It is their land after all.

I certainly won't pay someone to hunt their land, but there is nothing wrong with it. Lots of other states don't have the deer population that Kansas has, and it brings revenue into the State for out of staters to come here and hunt. It would be nice if the local businesses could also take advantage of all the hunters coming in. I think that was the original point.

  9. Off topic:

    JJ,

I know your not to prone to following Winfield Publishing but they had a couple of articles lately that caught my attention:

One was an editorial about the number of people in the area that might be effected by medicaid cuts that have been proposed. We might have an above average number of those people in the area.

The other was the article about the Governor's propsed cuts to next years budget.

I was impressed with the repsonses by Abrams, Kelly.
Abrams even stated he would like to have a discussion about the tax structure and what is allowed as an exemption.
    Got any thoughts?
Maybe he'd do a live blog!

  10. Btw:

I think the question that should be asked is:

Do we need more new taxes? OR do we need to re- think what should be taxed or exempted and how to do it?

  11. Good points.
I may do a live blog with them. I know Kasha would, and Abrams probably would.
I was thinking of trying to do a live blog with them and perhaps Ed Trimmer, maybe two at once?
The tax structure is a good point.
Remember, the republicans gave tons of tax breaks to businesses when they were in power.

Under Obama, gun rights were expanded when firearms were once again transportable into state parks.

And what does the NRA do? Keep scaring their mindless followers as spokespersons for the gun lobbies to milk them of every penny they have.
