ReplyDeleteFirst things first — fix the computers

The City of Arkansas City is dealing with some serious computer problems.
Glitches in the office software led to billing problems that could have shorted the city tens of thousands of dollars, had they not been caught and corrected, according to city officials.
So far, according to these officials, problems that were discovered were corrected.
But the glitches make you wonder what might happen next.
Or what has happened and wasn't caught.
They also make you wonder how much of this is human error and how much of it is machine error.
Accounts receivable and accounts payable are the guts of any business or entity. City commissioners are right to focus energy on this problem.
Before we build new sidewalks, ball fields or even the hospital, the city needs to make sure it has a reliable computer system and reliable people operating it.
First things first. A complete overhaul would cost $250,000, so commissioners hope to fix the system to avoid such a hefty outlay in tight budget times.
City Treasurer Kathy Braungardt called the current software a "dinosaur." She and others are making the case for a new computer information system.
Whatever the problem, and whatever the solution, it should happen yesterday.
yeah, yeah, yeah...tell your story walkin'. $130,000.00 give me a break. (Creekstone) In any other organization. Losing that kind of cash would be grounds for an immediate dismissal. But, in good old Arkansas City, what do we do? We give the folk who "found" the error a commendation. Now they want $250,000.00 to "fix" the problem. Yeah, that's it, I'll just throw more money at the problem. Give me a break. Newkirk, here I come. (pack, pack, pack) jk, I'm not moving, it's too much fun to stay here & complain.
ReplyDeleteI have to wonder if any of the sales tax money will go for this new venture?
ReplyDeleteSooooooo....if the computers have been messing up, maybe my $140 water/sewer/trash bill should REALLY be only $35???? I can see a class action suit coming out of this.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it. Some of the commissioners have been dead set against upgrading the computers since they were elected. But I heard the auditors are requiring it. Does the commission override the audit? At what point do they stop letting things slide and start fixing things? Just like the trucks that needed to be replaced and ended up burning up with a lot of other equipment. Why wait until it costs MORE money?? Fix it now before it gets really expensive.
ReplyDeleteOK here's a question for you, if your spouse called and said that the car had a flat tire so they just went ahead and called the dealer about what's available in a newer model. What would you think? Same thing.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have all the facts!
