  1. Just a quick question that ties in with our conversations from last week.

Should the shooting at Fort Hood be considered a terrosist act?

I'd be willing to bet that a majority of people who are opposed to Hate Crime legislation think that this should be considered terrrorism, and Hasan should be charged accordingly.

    Isn't it the same thing?
Why should his motivation have any bearing on the charges?
We have laws to deal with shooting and murder.
Does it really matter if he did it because he hates America?

    Just wondering...

We shall see which direction things will take. Did he hate his country? Maybe maybe not. There are many mass shooters that kill for various reasons. His may have been because he was trying to get out of the army because of his beliefs and went off the deep end. I noticed on the last roll call memorial service they had on the news last night that many of the ones called that died were higher ranking soldiers Capt....ect. Could he have been targeting them and some of the lower ranking soldiers got hit by chance? It will be interesting to find out when his trial comes up.
Right now, I am not sure this is a hate crime. It may be a hate crime for sure, hate for his superiors for making him serve against something that he believes is against his religion. From those who knew him and his family and co workers, he didn't hate america. It will be interesting to see which way this will go. He will be tried in military court though. They can and will be tougher on him.

  3. interesting question about hate crimes and terrorism.
in this case, im not sure calling it terrorism would matter as far as punishment. there are not harsher penalties for terrorism i dont think?

Ill try to post some tomorrow

  5. I guess my real point is this.
President Obama has decided not to call our current wars "Wars on Terror." He has been careful not to label this current act terrorism. I don't see how you can have it both ways There are many on the right who are outraged by this. However, they are the same people who see no need for hate crimes. Why the need to call it terror? What does the motivation matter? Don't we have laws to deal with acts of violence such as those comitted by "terrorists?"

  6. I have to agree. I think you make a good point.
After thinking on it some, I really dont know if it matters if what happened at ft hood is labeled terrorism or not.
    What is terrorism?
You could call any violent crime terrorism.
If he is to be put to death for his crimes, it wont mater what it is called.
    So i guess i being consistent then :) ?

  7. Is there anyone who does NOT believe this is a domestic terrorist? SERIOUSLY? ANYONE?

He recruited two people to go with him on a suicide mission to kill people who never did anything to him but belong to a group that believes differently.

How could anyone NOT believe this is a terrorist act? How do you define terrorism then?

  8. From the news information I got he acted alone. We may find out that he wanted out and they wouldnt let him. They say that he shot randomly, but I listened to the last roll call they had at the memorial service and the shooter took out two Captains, a Major and a Lt Col. Along with numerous other Spec. and Pvts. To me he was trying to make a point to those who may have had rank above him. Yes, there was terror that day, but IMHO it may have been a soldier that just went off the deep end. We shall see...

  9. Agreed! He may of also went off the deep end for feeling like he might of been betraying his roots. I hope the guy talks, it will be interesting to see what comes of this.

  10. IT WAS TERRORISM, THE GUY WAS INVOLVED WITH RADICAL ISLAMIC LEADERS

  11. Again, my point is, why do we have to lable it as terrorism? Isn't all murder terror?
Don't we have laws already on the books to deal with terrorism? When you call this act terror, it diminishes all other acts of murder. When anyone is murdered, don't you think they are terrified? Does his motivation really matter?

Why should it matter any more or less than those who murder / attack someone just because they are black, or gay, or hispanic...

Seriously, I think we at least need to be consistant.

  13. "I doubt any of Tiller's victim's were terrified."

If you mean the women who had abortions, then I agree with you that they were not terrified. They didn't want a baby to complicate their lives, so they were more than happy to let someone murder it. But, in my mind, Tiller's victims were not the women, they were the babies who had no choice and no voice.

  14. If we don't call Husan's terrorism, then how can we call 9/11 terrorism? Husan took out all those soldiers for the same reason the four planes took out the towers, the Pentagon, and the pasture. They were radical Muslims. They despise us as a country and the ones left that are Christians. They dislike our freedoms we have in America. At the rate we are going, those freedoms won't be a threat to many terrorist for long.

Do you have inside info or are you just speculating Husan's reasons or lack of reasons for his ugly deed? Please give us some insight on the site you recieved your information. Generally on these types of investigations the real facts don't come out till there is a trial. Please quote the site you are getting your information so I can read it as well.

  18. Thank you CC, I think there will be much more info at trial time. It will be interesting to see what really made this guy tick. Hopefully it will make the Army a bit more cautious on who they put where in time of war.

You still don't get my point. Why do we have to call it anything? It was murder. We already have laws on the books to deal with that.

  21. @stuccomango

In my opinion, Terrorists have a political agenda and that is to terrorize certain groups small or large. They purposely do these things to intimidate others and keep people fearful. A murderer acts on their own and does not have a political agenda. Now I don't know about Husan, none of us know the real deal yet. But surely you are not telling us that 9-11 attacks shouldn't be labeled as terrorism? If not, then should we have no need for intelligence to keep our country and others safe.
