Friday night

We had our concert tonight. The music was good. The crowd was not.
There was threatening weather. There are graduations this weekend, and there was one tonight.
So there were some things working against us.
Im beginning to have doubts about these monthly shows.
But we have two more, one in june and one in july.
I need to get going on the main festival in October.
Jeff Adams was very good. He had a band inside his computer that played really well. It was him on his piano and a guitar player, but the computer was putting out several more instruments.
Tonya Loftis was very nice.
Sylvia Riggs was great. She is a folk singer type, and does songs from different eras. She also explains the songs, which is cool.
The band from derby was very hard rock and roll. It was interesting.
They played during the storm. Not many people still around but they had a good time.

Also the Cowley softball team did not get to play again today. They play at 9 a.m. Saturday. There will be a lot of games saturday, weather permitting.

  1. Hey James,
I don't know where everyone was at last night, but it was definitely THEIR loss. I really enjoyed the concert (my wife did, too). I know it's easy to get discouraged, but hang in there, bro.

  4. I think you need more secular acts and more acts that do not live around here that many of us have heard before. But I imagine you are on a tight budget too. And most of your donors want Christian music.

  5. If I recall correctly, River of Life was intended to be Christian music. I thoroughly enjoyed Geof Kimber last year who was from out of town.

  6. Why would you want to secularize a Christian event?

  7. You bring up a great question.
Some people tell me they want to hear local bands.
Others tell me to bring in out of town bands.
For the festival I will try to do both.
But the monthly shows are more for local people who dont play publicly all that much.
We did have a band from derby.
The question of whether to stick with local, or try more out of town people, is a good one. I would like to hear more opinions on that.
Also some people say it would be more attractive if we charged admission, as some people feel that if it is free it is not going to be good.
    Any thoughts there?

  8. I think you ought to charge some admission, a couple bucks per person, maybe 5. Then you should try to attract more established acts from out of town.

I made the comment about secularizing due to the fact that many of us do not want to hear about "Him" etc and watch guys raise there hands at the roof while we listen to music. I don't usually pay much attention to lyrics, but still.

Many of the folks that support music the most do not want to hear religion mixed in.

  9. Now there you go again wanting to be something you aren't! How many of the professional singers got their starts singing/performing in churches or at local events?
I think there should be some type of screening to promote or set a standard. But, the only way that some can get exposure and experience is by performing at small events.
Maybe the finally or main event should be of a more skilled nature but don't forget the little guys in the events leading up to Oct.
As for the secular - they can have their own event!

  10. my feeling on the secular is that there is plenty of that already.
but there are crossover musicians, who are kinda both.

  11. James just pick good music and it will be awesome. It doesn't matter from where it comes!
