monday, city commission preview

Here is what is on the agenda for Tuesday night.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday and open to the public.
There will be a public hearing on a loan from KDOT to pay for water lines. This is stimulus money. It will help pay for water lines to the new hospital, and other immprovements.
1. Consider proclamation declaring May 17 - May 23 as National Public Works Week in
Arkansas City.
2. Consider proclamation declaring May 25, 2009 as Poppy Day in Arkansas City.
3. Present Beautification Advisory Board’s Good Neighbor Award to Kiley Andes, Jaden
Moore, ACHS FFA and ACHS Work Ethics Department.
4. Hold hearing and consider resolution on use of state revolving loan funds for water system
improvements. (Voice vote).
The City has received approval to utilize Stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funded through the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund. The proposed projects entail the construction of a water main line from Kansas Avenue to Bryant Tower and a water main line to the new hospital.
The loan from KDHE (KPWSLF) is estimated to be $1,650,000. This loan will provide a nominal 20% forgiveness of the principal.
In order to proceed with the projects the City must conduct a Public Hearing and pass a Resolution authorizing the completion of an application to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment regarding a loan from the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund.
5. Review bids and consider resolution awarding contract for 4th Street sewer improvement
project. (Voice vote).
6. Consider resolution authorizing the City to accept the Neighborhood Stabilization Grant
and authorizing Mayor to sign the contract. (Voice vote).
Cowley County has been awarded a grant in the amount of
$253,657 which will be split between the Cities of Winfield and Arkansas City. The funds will
be utilized to acquire properties, demolish abandoned structures, and redevelop residential
neighborhoods. It is our intent to work with service organizations such as Habitat for
Humanity to help stretch the project funds. The project funds should allow the demolition and
building of approximately 2-3 homes within Arkansas City over the next 18 months.
7. Consider ordinance rezoning 1004 N. 1st from R-1 to B-2 - Jim Graham. (Roll call vote).
8. Consider Mayor’s appointments to City Boards.

  1. Off topic - If you go to CNN.com today there is an article on the Mexican Drug cartel and its presence in the U.S. There is an interactive map which shows their specific strongholds and locations. Inside the red baloon for OKC is a dot for Ponca City, Ok. Who'd of thunk it!

  3. Yes I do believe that we are near the area where drug traffic exists. We have some home grown people that manage a healthy living without a work place to support it.
