Stimulus or steal-from-us

Over on Byte Daily's blog, there is a piece about Kasha Kelley voting against money for a stimulus package that would extend unemployment pay for the unemployed.
I don't know why she voted that way - but plan to ask her at the live blog later today - but I do know that there are people that are not fond of the stimulus packages.
Here in (between the) river city, there is a little controversy on the city commission about stimulus money. Tonight the commission will consider whether to accept a loan from the state that involves stimulus money. The loan will be used to pay for water line projects.
Mell Kuhn is against it. He is in the construction business. He bids on a lot of projects with various cities. He says the stimulus money has too many strings attached. You have to use certain things and follow certain guidelines that make the prices go up. So while the cities are getting more stimulus money for projects, they are also paying more for those projects.
The stimulus money may be good thing, but we do need to remember, that this is OUR money that is being spent. It's not like the people in Washington had trillions of dollars in a secret Swiss bank account. We will be paying back the stimulus money for years, if not for generations.
But on the other hand, if the economy gets to booming, that will pay for a lot of it too.
A lot of it is just clashing ideologies.
So which is it, stimulus or steal-from us?

  1. I would have to agree w/ Mell (for once) on this one. Anytime you deal with the government, there are some sort of springs attached it seems.

  2. Most of the stimulus = socialism people! If you want someone to take care of you, move back in with your parents. My kids don't want to do it!

  3. For the record - I am not for spending future generations into debt. However, I think it has to be looked at by each individual entity and what other options they might have instead.
We have gone through several economic bubbles and some areas have emerged better than others and still have available options. But, to take it just because its there isn't a good enough reason.
I hope they discuss their options in depth and
don't just choose to rule by majority vote!

  4. I don't like the idea of the federal government going so deeply into debt to provide these programs, but if they are going to spend the money, I would like for it to be spent here.

We don't seem to have any choice about how much or on what the money will be spent, but if they insist on spending it we should take adavantage of the situation. BUT, we do need to make sure we are getting the best deal even after figuring all of the strings attached.
