What happened

Ok, here is the real deal of what happened.
I am responsible for most of what happened, so I'm not looking for anyone to see me as a victim or anything.
I did make a mistake. I think they were very heavy handed over this. Perhaps they were wanting to get rid of me anyway and took this opportunity.
Strange thing is, last Thursday I was told I was being put on a week of probation. Then I get a call Monday asking me to come in to the office. I was out of town and told them I could not, so they just said they were going to fire me.
That's basically it.

So what brought all this on.
It goes back to the spider bite i had really. That was nearly a week and a half ago. Anyways, Monday before yesterday, I accidentally sent the wrong information to the webmaster, and that caused all the problems.
I was still feeling the effects of the spider bite, was not thinking clearly, and was pretty tired. I was working on a couple of other things, and Seaton started bugging me about getting something online about the officer being fired.
This was two days after the spider bite. I was still pretty sick, but had come in and worked half a day on sunday and was on my 12th hour of Monday. No excuse, but that's the deal.

I called a few people. Sent emails. Got an email from chief Wallace.
What I thought I did was type a sentence, and then I thought I sent that sentence to the webmaster. Apparently I sent the newscow story too. The webmaster put it all up there.
Honestly I dont even remember sending anything to the webmaster.
It was all a fog.

Ok, next I did something really stupid.
The next day, I didn't bother to look at what was actually on the site, so when questioned, I didn't give much of an answer.
I was not sure what had happened and was still feeling a little foggy headed.
By Wednesday I was saying I was sorry, apologizing and all that.
Thursday I was put on probation for a week. Monday they told me that I was being fired instead of being put on probation.

There was also some conflict over whether i had "talked" with chief Wallace. I had emailed with him. Wallace said he did not confirm the case with me and that was made into a big deal as well. His email said the firing of the officer had happened and what newscow wrote was accurate. I took that as confirmation. Wallace didn't think he did. I talked to Wallace later on, and he understood and did not feel I had ripped him at all.

So that's what happened.
I made a stupid mistake, But it was not something that was in the paper. It was an online update of a two day old story.
I didn't handle it real well in the days immediately afterwards.

Thats the deal.

  1. JJ - by "Seaton" is that JR or SR or both? Just curious.

Good luck to you and hang in there.

  2. Did you ask them why it went from being suspended to being fired? Did you get severence? Probably not, the cheap bastards.

  3. At the very least get your unemployment check!

  4. It was JR.
Ive not talked with Sr. at all about this.

  5. Does the jr have the abosolute authority to fire you?

  6. I'm not trying to pile on, I truly am sorry for your situation. BUT (just to play Devil's advocate, I think these are where most people find fault with your side of the story)- why wasn't this story in the paper right after it happened? Most people I talked to knew about it before Newscow or Traveler reported it. Why the two (actually four) day lag? And - why was there even a Newscow link anywhere on or near your computer? Lastly, as a medical professional, I have never heard of a spider bite causing the symptoms you are describing. I surely have not seen everything, but was your fog from the medication? Was this a self-diagnosis? Were you already sick?

I think if you clarify these issues you may garner more support.

  7. Here are some answers.
Im not really looking for support as much as understanding. What I did was wrong. How I handled it was wrong.
Im just saying a medical condition played a part in what I did. Doesn't excuse it, but makes it somewhat understandable?
Ok, here are answers to some of your questions

why wasn't this story in the paper right after it happened?
    ..
Part of the reason was, I had been sick for a few days, and was not even getting out of the house. No one else checked I suppose.
    >...

why was there even a link to Newscow?

I meant to just look at it to see what it said. I did not know anything about it so just needed a bit of background.
It was still there when I got the email from wallace.
This was major stupid on my part. I know.

My wife is an RN. She found the spider bite on me the second day after I got sick.
On the previous saturday (before the fiasco happened) i had a fever of 101. She said if it went higher I was going to the hospital, but she managed to get my fever down.
I had been under a lot of stress because we had been missing people and I was doing their jobs as well as mine.
I think those things together made me not think rationally.

    Im not excusing what happened.
    It was my fault.
I thought a week suspension was fair and reasonable punishment.

This whole thing was so unlike me. It was very out of character. I was acting in a way i do not normally act, and that was caused in part by my medical condition.

I did go to the doctor the day this happened at the paper. he agreed with my wife's assessment.
In the hour before this happened, i had a tetnus shot and a anti-biotic.

  8. 101 is barely a fever at all. And a tetnus shot and antibiotics are not known to have cut and paste side effects.

So, is there no chance of getting your job back?

It seems Davey Jr really is the egomaniac he is said to be, huh. Don't you hate it when people are handed their career by their mommy or daddy, and usually have to have their hand held by people who know what they are doing and rightfully deserve the job they are training the owner's kid to do? I sure do.

  9. It's just sad that you lost your job by reporting about someone else that lost his as well.

My wife, the nurse, said it was a significant fever. There was no problem with the cut and paste. Ive said, it was my fault.
Just saying there was extra pressures that influenced me to do weird stuff that I would not normally do.

    Ive no idea

Im not really commenting on that.
    He is a good writer.

  11. Sorry to hear about you losing your job. I enjoyed your blog. And I agree with your wife - a fever of 101 in an adult is significant -- keep your chin up!!

  12. So, JJ have you ever thought about joining sides with the enemy? I am not in anyway afilliated with NC. But, it seems to me he is a writer and not a manager! There is probably alot more that could be done with his sight with some additional help, direction and some advertising capital. Besides you'd be back in business of dogging those officials:-).
I think you still have alot of support and knowledge of current affairs locally I hope you don't go into a non-media job.
One other thought a new gig might open you up to more of the county as well - there is a need for indivduals that are willing to not only provide a better understanding of isssues but also to make the people in public positions do their jobs! (Thats not to suggest they aren't but, sometimes they need a push!!)
Also, the need to breakdown some barriers!

    What say you!!

  13. I say ive started a new blog.
    We will see what happens.
Tell people about it if you like it.

  14. But blogs don't make you any money, right?

  15. Seaton Jr is a worthless little weasel. He uses his daddy's money and paper to get even with others.

I don't always, hell very seldom if ever, agree with you JJ, but this is just some more BS from little Davey. I would rather see you stay on at the paper and Davey boy should be fired. About time he had to make it on his own without daddy.

  16. Did you have to sign a no compete clause with Winfield Publishing?
You don't have to answer if its NOYB.

  17. Are you going to try to do any live blogging of the commission meetings? I have my doubts they will. The anonymous poster May 6, 2009 1:08 PM has an excellent idea of teaming up with Newscow. It does look like they could use a little help!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm curious. How did Seaton know about the cop being fired? Did he read it on Newscow?

    ReplyDelete
  19. He read it on newscow. That's why he was upset about it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. You should have told him to get off his lazy ass and get the story himself since you were sick.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sooo... If there was no newscow, everyone would assume the Traveler was doing fine? We would not notice unreported stories?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree, if you was sick, then why couldn't someone else take over? No matter what the fever number is, is will still make someone feel like crap, even after its gone, for a few days. Sounds like a bunch of bs going on around the newsroom.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If there was no newscow, everyone would assume the Traveler was doing fine? We would not notice unreported stories?
    >>
Oh people notice. We get calls all the time wondering why a wreck was not in, or that the cops were at a certain house etc., was not in.
That's how newspapers - and newscow and any news organization - gets news, from people telling them about it.
Seaton is just freaked out by newscow. He doesnt get excited when things are in the Eagle or some other paper.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "I'm not really commenting on that. He is a good writer."

So, he is a good writer.. Hitler was a great speaker, that doesn't make him any less of a d!ck.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If you ask me Newscow is just a sleazy site that gets stuff without confirming. I found this out when someone very close to me was found dead. In January. Before the family was even fully notified they were talking suicide and printing all kinds of things that were not accurate and had to be called on several occassions. I just think there was a more tactful way that they could have called the Traveler out on this. Like a personal phone call to the Traveler and not blast it all over. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree w/ the last comment, we are very close friends & what newscow did was wrong & VERY uncalled for. They only had information through rumors. It was posted online before the family even knew. They were talking about how it was suicide, if they knew this family or the victim at all they would have known this was NOT the case. How dare anyone from newscow or anywhere else go and put stuff like that for EVERYONE to read not having any information to back it up. Ever since that happened I don't even log onto newscow anymore cause I know what they posted about my friends relative was all rumor & speculation so how can we truely beleive ANYTHING they post anymore! GOOD LUCK.....I hope they get what they deserve!

  27. I agree and am empathetic to the last two posts. Also, it would be nice if the ACPD would find a policy and stick to it with what information they are going to release and what they are not. The release some of the wildest speculation and the withhold other info for very little reason. But I guess it makes a difference who your daddy is sometimes.

  28. Well, well, well...
What goes around, comes around, eh? What is that saying? "Do unto others as you would have done unto you?" I would almost feel sorry for you, if not for the fact that you are very good at selling people out and working really hard at NOT working. You want to climb the success ladder on someone else's hard work, while you keep them down. You claim to be a Christian...
I guess you will now "reap what you sow".
I know I should "turn the other cheek," but I'm not the one who claimed to be someone I wasn't.
It is my wish that you become enlightened. You, and a whole lot of others.

  29. Some of us would really appreciate it if the extreme negative people would not post on this blog. There is nothing wrong with some constructive critisim, but please don't bring hate and taking digs at other people.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thats a former employee.
I dont want anyone feeling sorry for me.
    A little understanding perhaps.
I just want people to know i am not a thief.
A bit stupid maybe, but not a thief.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well I certainly hope that is not the same one that got on the other blog and acted the fool.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow I see a post on here that sounds like something I would say, but I didn't. However, when many people experience the same fate it is hard to tell em a part. I have to agree, what goes around does come around and I have to say I'm happy to see it go around. The mud you threw at me I have turned into gold. We will see if you can do the same with your mud!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I disagree with your comment about how news papers get the news, where I work, we leave our desk to get the news, we don't just let it come to us. If we did, we would have no news like the Traveler.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would rather read the Traveler 100 times over reading newscow....even if they had to get information from other news sources! 100 times over newscow!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Newscow posts inaccurate information so because of that I would rather read the Traveler as well.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Looks like all the news folks should be newly-awakened to the consequences after this, and make for much better and more accurate reporting in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Those of you who refuse to vary your news sources for one reason or another are blind idiots. You should always take anything you read or hear with a grain of salt. Nobody gets everything right, everytime. I remember when CNN told me OKC was bombed by Al-Qaida. I still watch from time to time. To be a well-informed citizenry requires the citizens to inform themselves and not take any single news source as gospel. Some of you people, with your grudges and personal vendettas act like a bunch of 11 year old girls.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow, that last comment was purely to be insulting....must feel good to insult others...I wouldn't know. I try to take the better road.

    ReplyDelete
  39. They must work for newscow...ha ha!

  40. If I was an 11-year-old girl, I'd be ticked off.

  41. Ha Ha, yeah. That one comment was a little on the crazy side! Insulting!

  42. I have lived in Cowley County my entire life and have seen for years that the news media is very slanted. The Seatons bought the papers in Winfield, Ark City and Newkirk for a reason, so they could make money and so they could control information. They print what they want. They pay a pittance and unfortunately many of the articles are poorly written with even poorer grammar. But I suppose when you pay low wages, you get low quality writing. Don't get me wrong, they are not all bad, but there is so much that is reported with such a leftist take. They have an agenda always. A great example of that was the CASA benefit where Mini Dave absolutely tried and convicted Mel Kuhn in the paper. I don't personally think much of Mel Kuhn, but I've seen the CASA shows before and they have always been pretty raunchy. But Mini Dave's took this skit personally. Perhaps race is a sensitive issue for Mini Dave. I have noticed myself logging onto Newscow more and more though when I want to know something and can't seem to find coverage in the Traveler or Courier. As much as I detest CC Broadcasting, they seem to be scooping the Traveler.
