The city commission for Arkansas City had a quick meeting last night.
They gave preliminary approval to their budget. This means they cannot now spend more than what they have budgeted, but they could reduce it.
There will be a public hearing Aug. 3., and the final budget could be passed at that time.
The important thing is that there is no tax increase. Spending is very near the same level as last year. The only controversial items were some vehicles.
Valuation is going down and revenues are not increasing as a result. That is making it a little hard on the city.
They will also have their regular meeting on Aug. 3 which is a Monday. National Night Out will be held Tuesday August 4.
There will be a complete story on the web site shortly.
Also, the cop notes are posted on the site.

I also wanted to mention the hunting and fishing column. At present its all about fishing, but eventually our outdoor writer will get to some hunting material.
Here you can find out what's biting and where to catch em. Also general information about the outdoors.
I would like to have more specialty pages such as this, and hope to head in that direction shortly. If anyone would like to get involved in that let me know.
The fishing column shows up on Thursdays.
Also participate in the poll. I just posted it.
There was not a place to comment on the poll, so I will give my two cents worth here. The rivers are a natural resource and should be given the attention to make them shine. If we gave river access to the public our own residents will use them for canoeing and fishing and possibly swimming. If we do it right those from out of town will come. With the casinos to the south, and a place for recreational facilities in town it could bring in out of towners, with out of towners brings revenue, it would be a win win situation.
