Good Friday morning

Good morning everyone.
The new police reports are posted on the site.
I have the new fishing column, with pictures, and hope to have it posted soon. Maybe this morning, so check back.
Im still looking for more columnists, so get in touch with me if you have an idea.
Im still trying to get settled in after the trip. seems there is really a lot to do just to try to catch up with the news and the site.
That's not to mention the list of things the wife wants done. Guess she is feeling better too.
I have several stories to tell from the trip. Its interesting how things spark new ideas while out on the road.
There is a lot we can do in Arkansas City. What do you think it will take to get people moving and active?

  1. Here is a idea, do not even bring up the thought of having painted up pigs, bulldogs, or Jackasses around town, it is tacking & trashing looking. Ark City looks bad enough right now from the freaking meth heads cooking right across the street from the Rec. Center. What the Heck?.... Did the neighbors next door (Traveler) not have a clue?

  2. What is the status on live blogs of the work sessions and city commision meetings. Seems like there promised transperency got cloudy....

  3. The city is not allowing us to hook on to their web access. They say it is a security issue.
So that means we will have to find other ways to access the internet.
Once I do, I can live blog again.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Traveler did it earlier this week. Maybe they are being selective about who is allowed access. Isn't there some kind of card you can attach to your comp which gives you access wherever you are? How about texting?

  5. You must have made Kuhn mad again. Guess we were picking on smelly Jr. too much. Or maybe you did not take down his threats fast enough.

Or maybe it is because you let people talk trash on Mr. Wallace.

Or maybe they know you post religious stuff on here often and so they are trying to keep up the separation of church and state... well I doubt it is that one.

Do you not think Mr. Walace does not deserve some

  8. No I completely think Mr. Wallace deserves quite a bit. I like my law men to be quiet and serve honorably.

  9. Making myself a target:
Even though the title of the blog and the web site is ac revived, it has only taken a short time for the anonymous bloggers with the venomous comments to begin to dominate this site also. In fact, the traffic is down on ac.net but the acidic tenor is moving here.

I thought the audience here was one that wanted to move away from anonymous stone throwing.

It doesn't matter what side you are on if your tactic and tenor are the same. In fact, it's kind of hard (or at least futile) to have a feud if everyone everywhere has the same philosophy.

Maybe AC and blogs are just not a vehicle for progressive outcomes. Maybe?

  10. Charles

You just have to read through all the stuff to get to the good posts. Even the people that post the stuff have some good ones.
Give JJ credit that he doesn't restrict the blog to the point it has no personality. Even if it isn't what you prefer to read. You probably wouldn't be friends with the posters you don't like - but, whats the point in asking if you aren't going to give them a say.
As for AC.Net I used to try and follow JR's blog until I figured out he was blocking opposing views.
I do approve of deleting posts that border on slander or are libelous.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh and I delete the ones that are vulgar and make them repost. I think JJ has done that as well.
Its really not much different than any breakroom or resturant.
But, do you take the time to listen to what is being said? There is a lot to be learned from the attitude and demeanor displayed on the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  12. That is so true, even if some of the comments are not what EVERYONE wants to hear. There is a reason for everyones demeanor. Some may have been hassled by the city for one thing or another, some may have been hassled by law enforcement for one thing or another. Some may just have a hard time affording the high taxes here in the city and are just tired of the daily run in the squirrel cage, running as hard as they can go and never making any headway. I would suggest to you Charles, to listen to all people, even if they are saying something you DON't want to hear, WWJD? Kindness, understanding and forgiveness is the key to peoples heart, not sensoring, ridicule, or plain ole ignoring them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Of course, I read for understanding. That is my calling. But, I am not quite sure what good idea comes from making personal attacks against the Police Chief or any other public "target".

I held the seat for a while. I know it happens. I also know, that people can present differing ideas without being condescneding towards others.

Internal attacks never build team. I agree that Mr. Jordan allows a forum for almost any opinion. So, since one is allowed to speak their mind frely, why not do it repsectfully also.

You can say, "I respectfully disagree." You can say, "I don't see it that way." You can even say, "I think my idea is better." None of those require a character attack against anyone and it introduces that you are about to offering a new thought. In discussing issues in such a manner, you eliminate the need and wasted time of trying to filter through the hostility to get to the point.

It's like the difference between screaming at a child everytime you want them to do something verses making eye contact and clearly stating an expectation. Now, ther is a real illustration of how differeing agendas can challenge our communications capabilities.

There are intelligent thoughts offered on here. They just get diminished by the insistence that anyone who doesn't "see it my way" is a liar or crook or reprobate or other hideous life species.

But, if you took the time to read all this (first, I say thank you) and still see my pespective as wrong, I will concede to your opinion and try to go with the flow.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree that some comments are a bit over bearing and rough, there are those who have no tact, but even still they are voicing their opinions. I get ruffled myself with some of them. However, I still try to understand their feelings, although I do think some people are just plain mean.
I have disagreed with JJ on many things, and he has ruffled my feathers more than once. But I do see that he is attempting to give many of the people of AC a voice. Even though many voices are ones that some may not want to hear.
While I can see that JJ is trying to attempt to bring change to the city, I can see that allowing the little people to say what they want and need to say without sensoring is a wonderful tool to see how many people here in the city really feel, when done anonymously they have no fear of retaliation on the city's part. I understand in a perfect world that wouldn't happen, but this world is far from perfect.
Keep up the good work JJ, and Charles, I guess we will have to agree to disagree on somethings. Some we totally agree on. Keep up your blogging as I enjoy reading your posts.

  15. Have you ever noticed the gravel on a riverbed?
It often starts out starts out rough and jagged-
but due to the flowing water and the stones rubbing against each other they get smoothed out over time.
Maybe? That is how "life" works!

  16. Alright, there's some civil discussion about civil discussion.
I do delete the rare post when it is over the top. And that top is higher than a lot of people's tops.
Its like the supreme court justice said, he could not define obscenity, but he knew it when he saw it.

  17. For Charles
If some of the city staff were not spending our money like they were CEO's of big corporations, maybe some of those comments you question have more validity than you want to accept. After I find a credit card charge of $2.54 for a bagel on an out of state trip [about one trip a month]as wrong [maybe not illegal] but darn sure not respectfull to the citizens of this community.

Maybe citizens starting to look at this kind of behavior is the real reason they don't want the blogs. Whats your opinion?

  18. A bagel, come on man, at least get a doughnut! Are you not a police officer? Get with the program man!

  19. hmmmm, well he could have went to some trendy sidewalk cafe and paid $8.95 for quiche, another $3 for a cup of fruit, and $6 for some starbucks
$1 in tax and $2 for tip
and had a $20.95 breakfast on the city.
    just adding some perspective.

    ReplyDelete
  20. well yea, i forgot the donut, add about $3 for that, and its a $23.95 breakfast.
just wait till lunch and dinner.
in most cities you could easily spend $100 a day on food.

  21. Some folks around here both need to toughen up a bit and stop taking themselves so darn seriously. If you put yourself in the public eye, you need to be ready to face the consequences. Things are going to be said about you, and you need to be prepared to deal with it.

The police chief and how he handles himself is absolutley up for public discussion. A mayors son with a questionable past who decides to preach to the citizens of the town about what we should and should not be doing may very well have his past brought up. Deal with it people. It is not the end of the world. If this really gets you stired up, you really should find some avenue to find inner peace with yourself so you are not so bothered by little comments on a little blog.

  22. You're right, comments on here should not bother us, but it does sometimes, especially when being attacked. Does anyone every wonder what the conversations on here would be like if we all were face to face. Maybe we wouldn't misunderstand things so much or maybe we would be at each others throats alot faster. Just a thought!

  23. Mayor’s son with a quotable past! There are 22 people alive today only because of the actions of my son. That’s right he and a fellow marine ran back in to the burning pentagon and pulled out 22 injured men and women after the 9/11 terrorist attack. Got anything else to say give me a call.

  25. Yea, I do think public officials are up for scrutiny.
I really don't think family members are.
The ex-mayor's son apparently made some bad choices at some point, so we all have i guess. He seems to be a pretty responsible citizen now though.
The attacks on the son were way over the top I thought. They were not relevant to today, and were not relevant to the commissioner doing his job on the commission.
Thats why I pulled the plug on that kind of stuff, and why I quit doing the open blog thing. I would like to do that open topic blog again, if people would just not get so ridiculous on it.
I guess questioning what the police chief spent on a bagel is legitimate, but it seems kinda petty to me.
Would you rather have a police chief who did not keep up with the times and who did not continue to educate himself?

    ReplyDelete
  26. About family members. Reminded me of a story.
In South Carolina, in the town where I was a sports writer, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce's son was a big basketball and baseball star. Averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds a game on the hardwood; and hit .350 and led the state in rbi on the baseball field.
Led the high school to state championships in both his senior season. Signed to play baseball at THE USC. (not the one in california)
THing was, no one ever mentioned who his dad was. I finally did, but it just struck me as odd.
How much flack would the man have gotten if the kid was a hoodlum instead of a sports star.

Petty maybe, but city says it has financial problems. Did brand X, pay "all" your expenses?
Supposed to be qualified when hired. Does the city treat every employee the same way. [NO].
Go back and total up these "petty" expenses for the last 12 months, then come back comment. Also would rather have a police chief who spends sometime on leadership. Very lacking within our police department.

  28. I said for whomever read my thoughts through, if they differed in opinion, I would concede.

There are so many approaches to how you move a group of people (community etc) forward.

I am an advocate of team. Even then, three have been some teams that bickered within and still won it all. So long as what we do is in the direction of identifying and realizing some improved future state, go for it.

If it turns out that the only reason why your side OR the side of the person you oppose are, neither one the majority that is a good indication that we have not divided but splintered the whole. What is divided can easily be reunited. What is splintered typically has to be rebuilt. I think mending is more cost efffective than rebuilding.

Maybe let's just don't go so far that we have to rebuild. Hey, I think I will use that as the framework for pre-marital counseling. Thank you all for inspiring the thinking about the difference between a matter that causes division versus issues or behavior that splinter relationships. Thank you sooo~~~~~o much. It's going in my book (after some fleshing out of course)

While I don't care for the Police chief personally I will have to say that yes, he was supposed to be qualified at the time he took the job, but, with law enforcement as in with teaching, you constantly have to be learning to keep up with the times. With so many scientific things for crime scene investigation, it is a need and a requirement for them to do at least 40 hours of re education per year. Much of that has to be done out of town. I'm with JJ on this one, while a two dollar bagel is outragous, it could have been worse.
And yes, it would be interesting for all to know just how each department is treated differently.

While the ex mayors son brought himself out in the open defending his dad, he doesn't deserve the constant ridicule that some are willing to project. If you say "inner peace" is what we all need to not get uncomfortable about some of the things said on here, I would have to beg to differ with you. I would say "inner peace" is what those who bash/trash/ or discredit others may need. You want to take shots at the exmayor? Go right ahead but leave his family alone. Even if they try do try to defend him. He is family to them and they love him. We should all be so lucky to have someone love us to that degree that they would take a bullet/harsh words for us.
To those bloggers who write mean spirited words, you have to sift through alot of BS to get to productive comments, the readers keep sifting away, while some people keep writing unproductive comments. Find some inner peace....

  31. Almost like those terrible Democrats vs the poor Republicans. If it's not our view were not supposed to have it. A blog is just that. A expression of views and you don't have to like them, even if they can open eyes, or make us aware that were not doing our civic duties, by not being aware of what is going on. but it's all right because it doesn't effect me. Well I hope it doesn't. Sound familiar?

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's ok to have a different point of view from others, especially when it has something to do with public office or changing things in public office. Things discussed here on this tread was ok till someone mentioned family of one of the local politians. That was hitting below the belt.
Personally I don't think the democrats are terrible, and I don't know MANY poor repulicans. We can share our point of views, and keep our leaders in check without taking shots at their families. You are right, we need to make the leaders answer to dicisions they make and why they made them. And if they make poor dicisions then make it an issue then vote them out. Every one is entitled to their opinions, and some fun from time to time, but, keep it clean, keep it truthful, and keep it productive.
Poor dicisions effect us all in politics. If dirt can be found then dig it up, keep it clean, truthful and productive. Not too much to ask.

  35. To the Honorable Mayor Charles Jennings

Thank you for the kind words Sir.

This shows that some people can be friends and not always see eye to eye, they can have differing opinions and still be civil they can agree to disagree.

Similar to; marriage and business and sports and virtually all endeavors of life. Not hard for some to fathom, however there are those that would rather have discourse and chaos and ugliness only to spice up the droll little lives.

To these words I bid you adieu; ‘May the Bird of Paradise lift you on its wings' and not fly over you because you may get droppings from parsdise on you instead of for you.
