What will the neighbors think?

This comment was part of a comment posted about the clean air group. The leader suggested charging the tobacco companies with drug dealing.
Ok, it might not be such a great idea in reality, but it does get people talking, and that was the point of him making the statement to start with.
But what bothered me was this sentence ..

"No, he will only make Kansas look like a bunch of idiots, worse then before."

I remember other issues where people around here were real concerned about what others would think of Kansas because of someone being controversial.
Dr. Steve Abrams comes to mind.
Other people do too, some of whom are real idiots, but that isnt the point.
I wonder why it is people care about what people in other states think.
Why is this such an issue for Kansas. (not evolution or clean air - but what others think)
Ive lived in some other states, and this is the only state where I have heard that type of thing.
Just curious about that.

  1. When traveling, I am very reluctant to admit I am from Kansas. The evolution thing got us a big black eye. Mr. Abrams was partly responsible. He used to really be a nut. He has it seems modernized him self a bit. If the rest of the country and the world is solidly for something, we should not be against it. It does makes us look bad. Anti-evolution teaching, Fred Phelps, Randall Terry, Troy Newman, Mark Holick, Terry Fox, Scott Roeder, etc. - makes Kansas look really bad.

  3. So, JJ,

    Google me this!

I once met an idividual who had come to this area from East of the Mississippi. He had used a headhunter and his original request was to find him a job East of the big river. Why do people from the East want to stay there?
Also, I do think the People from the South have a more personal and respectful approach to each other - Yes Sir - Yes Maam and always say thank you. Even if they don't like you.
On a side note: I went to Vegas and at a dinner show met a Couple from Boston. They wanted me to keep repeating things so they could hear my Mid-Western accent! How about them Easterners they think they are the only ones that know how to talk!

    then:

I once went to Detroit we landed at the innercity airport. Went to a local Diner it happened to be Italian. Now if you haven't noticed the people back East are more abrasive toward each other they push or poke a little (not Physically)and if you don't push back they think there is something wrong!
So what's new about someone thinking there is something wrong with Kansas beside the fact that they think we have Munchkins!

  4. Great post. I agree. Its more the northeast that is abrasive, not so much the southeast. But more and more d*** yankees are moving south.
When I lived on the coast of S.C.., i knew more people from Ohio and Pennsylvania than i did from S.C.
But one thing, most people on the East coast do not care in the least what people around the country think.
I still remember that bumper sticker I loved in South Carolina. It said "I dont give a s**t how you did it up north."
that was the attitude most people had.
Even when they had the uproar over the confederate flag flying atop the statehouse, you never heard the argument that people from other states would think we were racists.

  5. @ 9:31 pm I have never had a problem telling anyone where I am from. And I have never had anyone ask about any of those things, or any of those people. I think you are projecting your own insecurities onto others.

  6. When I tell people where I' from, I get blank looks.
Anyways, maybe next we need to slap murder charges on the tobacco companies. Oh, and While were at it....Lets go after the food companies that sell "walking heart attack products." After all, the obese people are dying due to the tranfat and preservatives. How bout the pop? Anyone here know that in some people it can cause irregular heartbeats, whether its decaff, regular or diet? Lets just go out of control and start taking everything to criminal court. Hmmm... Yeah, it bothers me that Kansas could be the one to start the agenda of pushing drug charges on the tobacco companies they already been slapped with fines. Supreme court gonna be laughing at Kansas behind closed doors.

  7. maybe it is because the person they are speaking of has embarrassed our town in the past and on more than one occaision? he humiliated the big box developers and made us look like hicks. he made national headlines in black face and drag and had to be cornered by the naacp to apologize. he said outrageous things to the no smoking group. you think he is finished yet?

  10. You all should think about why you are embarrased.
Do you not think other states have their share of controversial figure as well?

  12. I guess it depends on who you talk to too. If you talk to dumb people, they probably think Kansas is just fine.
