More updates, city commission, DARE camp, clean air

Its been a busy day. Whole lot of new stuff on the site.
I have a long story about the city commission worksession last night. The issues on the agenda didn't take long, but the discussion of a TIFs came up again.
Also, there is a story from the clean air group. They want big tobacco companies to face drug dealing charges.
Also, more pictures from the DARE camp.

  1. So if a TIF fails to do well, the burden is on the citizens. If I want to go to Lowes, I have to pay for gas and meals in another town. So worst case scenario, I have to pay either way. It seems to me my money would be better spent in my own town.

Best case scenario, I don't have to pay any extra.

So, aside from perceived "fairness," what am I missing? This seems like a slamdunk. Do Smith and Kuhn stand to lose something? I am cynical of their "concern" for the citizens. In their respective businesses, they charge more than others in the same field (services, rentals), so I don't think they have a huge concern about helping out their fellow citizens.

What is it that we aren't being told?

  2. Depends on how its set up. it can be set up to where there is no burden on the citizens if it fails.

  3. Why are they holding out on a no lose situation? Are they making up their own facts again?

  4. Well then what the heck is the problem???

Well as I see it the problem is that you are listening to people who have a vested interst in the project(s) and dealing with a devleoper(s) that doesn't represent the companies they promote!
They are just TRYING to put together a deal to get public funding! So they can present that in the form of a proposal to a Company(ies)!
I think its been said before that there was going to be a Home Improvement and one other
    store.
But if you heard all the promoters it is definately a Lowes and an Appleby's!
I heard it over and over!
"Even those Commissioners should be fired because we had a chance at a Lowe's and an Appleby's." Really????????????
I can remember Andover Kansas when all that was there were two modern housing developements and a stip mall with a Pizza Hut.
They got where they are today because they are attracting the educated youth, professionals and skilled laborers.
I think you have the Plan backwards - but then in your opinion retail will save the day and in the process make some investors very rich!
Have you ever stopped to ask youselves why nothing ever happened to Goff Industrial Park before now or why there is no new industry in Ark City or for that matter at Strother Field?
Then they want to use Public Money in the form of a TIF to promote their agenda!
    That is the Problem!

  6. I do not understand why it would be wrong for the developers to make a profit?

  7. I think the clean air group is smokin something and it sure isn't tobacco. Kansas, no make that some of the people here in AC, is really starting to embarrass me. I have always been proud to say where I live, but Mr. Cambells radical views is taking it way to far stating the tobacco companies need to be charged with drug dealing. Whats next, chocolate???? People get addicted to food too. Lets make that illegal.

  8. JJ, u got any way to formatt that article on the clean air to fit the screen better? Kinda hard to read on smaller monitors.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ill see what i can do about formatting.
About the "radical" views. Truth is, tobacco companies knew their product was very addictive - as addictive as cocaine - and they sold it as though it were not.
Chocolate is not addictive in the same way at all.

  10. Developers make all kinds of profit...that's the nature of the business. Just ask Mell Ku.....ooohhhhhh....I think I'm starting to see the conflict.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I,with no doubt, agree that tobacco is addictive and they had hid the truth. I am not disputing the fact that they are bad for people. Pushing to have the companies charged with drug dealing is another thing. Its a waste of money, our money. Its been known for years they hid things, yet their is new smokers everyday. I also disagree with JJ saying chocolate is not addictive. It has chemicals that make some people feel better and drum roll, it has caffeine, isn't that an addictive drug? What about the morning cup of joe? Anyone ever watch how those people in the southeastern part of the US, in the mountains are addicted to mountain dew? Go ahead and push the drug dealing agenda, but better think about all the other things being sold thats legal and addictive.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well i got grief too when i suggested making everything legal.
    :)

  13. It's just that he's so radical it is becoming quite off-putting. Makes you want to avoid his agenda so as not to appear you have been swayed. I believe anti-smoking would pass in AC, if voted on...and before this guy came around I would have voted in favor of a ban. Now I would vote against it just to show this guy what an idiot he's being.

  14. TIF bonds do not create a burden to the city. Will someone PLEASE get their facts before they post...the facts...not the ones that are made up. This town drives me nuts with the lies....if we don't know we assume. If we don't know we make it up. GET the facts.

  15. Re: Jerry campbell being a radical.
The way to get heard is to be radical. There's so much going on, so many voices, it is hard to be heard.
I think I should probably be more radical too eh? :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. No, he will only make Kansas look like a bunch of idiots, worse then before. I've asked smokers and non smokers what they thought of charging the tobacco companies with drug dealing charges and so far everyone I know thinks its a stupid idea.

  17. Unless you had a loved one die from lung cancer...yes, you wish you had a chance to get the cigarette out of their hands. Perhaps, we can save one life...one family from the misery...one kid from losing a parent...it would be worth it. Wish someone had done it to help us save my parent.

  18. Smoking is a disgusting habit, and I hope they put it to a vote. I hate walking through a cloud of smoke to get into a business, so I just avoid the business. I would like to be able to shop in all the stores I want to, and not have to pick and choose.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Can anyone name one person the have ever known that has actually died of lung cancer from second hand smoke? I can't think of one. All the people I know that have died from lung cancer were smokers.

Well WHO is going to pay for all that infrastructure up front - it may be recovered at some point but I don't think the material suppliers and contractors are just going to donate or give you a long term payment plan!
Its interesting that other small cities won't even consider TIF's. But an entity that isn't in the City is pushing for that to develope their Prviately owned investment!

You got to love small town Politics!
If I had MY WAY I'D E.D. them! (and thats not erectile dysfunction).

See Cape Charles, Va. Davidson, N.C. Douglas,Ga. Etowah, Tenn. Farmville, N.C. Ord, Neb. Oxford, N.C. Reynolds, Ind. Scotland Neck, N.C.

All I could find in 5 minutes with my boss lurking about. These little towns are all great examples of how development, including TIFs can spur growth.
