Sunday

Im having a little computer trouble. Then it was hard to sign in to blogger.
So posts may be coming slowly for a bit here.
I have been getting some criticism and feedback from people in the real world about all the negativity and attacks on here. Strange thing is, I thought things had been a little quiet - even boring - lately.
BUt I do agree that people are too negative. Negativity just becomes a habit.
I know the negative nellies will say they are just being realistic, but that is a bunch of garbage.
Being realistic would be neutral.
The schools winning 37 awards - and all some people could do was still badmouth the schools.
ANyways, this rant has a purpose.
Someone challenge me to find from the blogs - five good (or just average) ideas, and two examples where people were actually doing something to make an idea happen.
That was the original purpose of blogs in my mind. To find good ideas and put them together with people of action, to make Ark City a better place.
Sooooooooooooooooo
How about if we see if we can do that.
Who is willing to take up a project?
YOu might fail. Someone might laugh at you, and no doubt, someone will criticize you. But you might also do well.
SO, can someone give me something to tell my friend who wanted some examples.

  1. This is a new news blog for Arkansas City. I will be covering city commission as my main niche. We will jump into other subjects that we find interesting, and I hope to have photos. The blog is for the community, so I will try to be responsive to reader interests. Let me know what you want.

If this statement from the top of your blog is anything like what you had decided to make this blog I think you have fulfilled your idea. There will always be people that will be negative in some way, that is just life.
It is good to take up community projects but what I would like to challenge every one in the community to do is, spend time with their children/grandchildren. Not by sitting in front of the TV, but doing age appropriate things with them. Take your little ones on nature walks in the evening weather allowing. When the weather is bad, bake cookies play cards or board games with them. Find out what your child is interested in and go do that with them. You may end up at the skate park but at least there, you will see who your children are with when they are away from you, and what they are doing.
It is good to take an active role in the community and to take on special projects on a daily basis. But when you are doing that, who is watching your children? You only get one shot at raising your children. There are no do overs. In my humble opinion, if you do this, you ARE taking up a community projext. The more quality time you actually spend with your children, the more positive role they will have on the community.
The point I am trying to make is if you want a project, invest in your child and don't leave it to the educators or the babysitter to do it all for you.

  2. Off topic, but please watch this video and read the text. If this is true, the next month and a half will be the most important time in our county's history for you to stand up and speak out.

  5. Yeah, they just keep reading the proposed laws and coming up with the truth the Government doesn't want you to see. How dumb.

@ 3:50, I truly hope you are joking. If not, you should go live in Russia.

  6. Time to get back on topic! Don't start another one of these threads that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

  7. JJ, you speak of getting comments about negativity from people in the real world.
What is your definition of people in the real world "as relates to Arkansas City".

  10. My definition of the real world, is the same in Arkansas City, or anywhere else. That is when someone i know is looking me in the eye and talking to me.

On the signing away soveringty (sorry about spelling) thing is a retread from the clinton administration.
It wasnt true then, it isnt true now.
Its just one of those conference things where world leaders get together and say stuff. Nothing will be signed by anyone.
    Except maybe expense reports

  11. I agree with the first poster. You have to spend time with your kids first. I see so many people involved with other projects it makes me wonder when they are spending the quality time with their kids. A good way to keep involved with your family is to find a project to do together. Even small kids can go for a walk with their parents and help pick up trash. If you worried bout the germs, put on some gloves. Its a start involving your child to care about their community. That is one of my biggest pet peeves is that people throw trash down and out of their cars.

  13. Yea, its pretty obvious which towns have pride and which do not.
Hate to admit it, but Winfield has us beat.
    Even Newkirk has its days.
Im not sure why that is?
But I dont think economics or wealth are real reasons (or excuses).
In our travels we have seen some very poor areas that had a lot of pride. They made their towns nice because they chose to.
What do you think it would take to change Ark City in that regard?
The change has to come from within...

  14. Our city has codes to enforce but don't. Lately, I have noticed a few houses being worked on around town in areas I thought would never see updates made. I was pleased to see this happening. I think houses should be kept in better conditions for the home owners next to these dumps do not have to sell their homes for far less.
I was delighted this past Friday when I saw that the dump on the southern end of Summit was finally torn down. Now if they will tear down a few other dumps like the one on West Madison by the bridge and one on East Madison across from the business they said was the worse in town. Now he looks pretty good compared to others.
Winfield residents jumped up and spoke out about the scrap iron business when it tried to enter into their town. Ark City would not have noticed. We have very little pride in our town, and the ones who do work hard in keeping our town clean, can't out do the ones who don't.
