Helping those in need

Interesting sermon in church this morning. Pastor was talking about where Jesus says when we do for others, we are doing for him, and when we don't do for others, we are refusing to do for him.
To help those in need is a "Christian" thing to do, and many are involved in that activity.
What surprised me was that he - the pastor - said he as glad that our government - some of our tax dollars - is set aside to help people in need.
He said he thought that was a biblical idea.
I agree totally, and I think that kind of preaching needs to happen in more churches.
Too often Christians get too linked with conservativism, and sometimes conservative ideas are not biblical.
Some people think government should not be in the welfare business. They point to abuses and such, and there are some, but when people are in need, they do have a real need even if they caused the need themselves.
There are people who will abuse the system.
But I think a lot of that is just making excuses.
A government that cares for the poor is a good thing.
Its better than spending money on bombs.

  3. I agree %100 with your post. We, who can afford to, take on a charity or two, but Obama has chosen to take on the charity of helping those in need across the US and that makes him a good person in my book. Not everyone that is poor in the US is lazy like some imply.

  4. @ 7:59 You act like Obama is spending his OWN money. He's spending our money. And our grandchildren's money. It's only charity if you are giving of yourself, not if you are being forced to against your will.

  5. @ 7:49 isn't the only one that feels positive on what Obama is doing with the poor. A little oil in that belly button will losen up that tight rear end of yours! Tax money for the poor is much more important than a new recreational facility or such things.

  6. Obviously JJ you are attending an evil liberal Church, much like the Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita.

I suggest you get yourself to a bilbe preaching church ASAP, like the Spirit One Church or the Summit Church. Only then will you be able to follow the lord.

  7. ^ Wow, Maybe you should take your own advice!

  8. I already do give to charity and I give to my church which gives to charity...plus I pay my taxes which goes to welfare. I don't think the conservatives preach against any assistance at all. But the democrats like to create the atmosphere to get more and more people on public assistance, because that guarantees them votes and then they get to control those people. Why don't you squeaky liberals quit enjoying all YOUR money and give more of it away? I see you living in your nice houses and driving nice cars. Come on, give it away! Quit giving mine away and let me give it away as I see fit. Obama has some of his own family he needs to help.

  9. Ideas like conservative or liberal are not found in the bible.
Both are man-made creations, having strengths and weaknesses. Neither should be considered "biblical."
Im just a plain old baptist.

  10. Way better than spending money on bombs, but we are spending on things we have no business spending them on.
Welfare for able bodied people who could well afford to work. Corporate bailouts for shody business practices, TARP money to fund projects that won't create a single job, or generate a single dollar of GDP.
Yes, helping others is Biblical, and yes, I think more people should do iy.
But when the gov't takes my money, and gives it to someone else without my consent, that is theft. This is not a Theocracy.

  11. This "squeaky" liberal just spent almost a hundred bucks at a fund raiser. Has a home thats not much, but at least its a roof over my head and drives a 80's car. Don't get welfare, dont get free insurance, so why don't you put your money where your mouth is and quit lumping a group of people together.

  12. When they stop lumping all of us together, I will

  13. Hey Squeaky,

On the other thread it was over a hundred. Now it was "almost" $100. next time what will it be? $1.75?

  14. I'm not the one that posted on the other thread spending over $100. And I don't lump everyone together.

  15. I give freely of my time, my money and my efforts to many local and state charities. I am not a liberal or a conservative but a person that just worries about what tomorrow will be like as we keep taking more and more tax money away. A professor told his class that every student would earn the same grade...first test came and some got high marks, some middle, some low...class average a B. Next test the ones with the high marks studied less and the class average dropped to a C...by the last test no one studied and they all got an F. It is the way I see our nation going. What is our future?

  16. Why work hard if you're going to have to share with the lazy people? Pretty soon we will all be in the same class. Maybe the government will even give us our job assignments like in Russia. How cool would that be?!

    Keep the change Obama.

  18. You assume poor people are lazy.
Maybe someday you will find out.

  19. June 16, 2009 5:15 PM , your ideas are radical and overblown. I would rather work hard and give to the poor instead of working hard and giving to the rich, like our last administration. Not every poor person is lazy, sometimes people have a life story as to the why and that it doesn't have nothing to do with being lazy. Why punish everyone for the ones that are simply lazy???
I don't want anyone to not think I don't support the troops, but I do not like how much money was thrown into that war, that is where some of problems began for the US. I hear alot of people saying the housing crisis is Clintons fault, hows that? Because he gave people opportunity to purchase homes? I blame creditors for taking that out of proportion. They are the ones at blame, they should of told people to purchase homes within their means, something they could afford if interest rates were to hit the roof. And why didn't the government put the brakes on those high interest rates instead of people losing their homes? Coulda, shoulda, woulda, can't turn back now its been a vicious circle of pointing fingers, but we could stop abuse of these practices now and in the future.

  20. Yea, Bush's war.
Most of the people hijacking the planes on 9-11 were Saudis. The masterminds of the attacks were Saudis.
    So we attack Iraq.
Who didn't have any weapons of mass destruction either.

  21. It couldn't possibly be the fault of the people buying houses' they couldn't afford? Do you buy cars or groceries you can't afford? Come on, sometimes on paper these people can afford them, but then are irresponsible with their money and don't make their payments. I know I am responsible for myself and my actions and I don't blame that on the bank or the government -- but you go right ahead -- maybe that makes you feel better. And yes it partly is Clinton's fault -- he thought everyone should be able to buy a house. Well, not everyone is responsible enough to buy a house -- get over it.

And there are countless stories of people who are rich that worked their way up - they all have backgrounds and stories too. Everyone has a story -- life is what you make of it. I guess if your going to let your 'story' control your life, then so be it - but don't blame it on anyone else. That's what makes America great -- you have every opportunity to do what you want with your life. In other countries, you don't have that choice.

  22. During Clinton's term, they passed regulations that demanded banks to make these loans to people that they knew couldn't repay them because Clinton believed everyone deserves the right to own a home. So, why do we want more government regulations? That's what got us in trouble in the 1st place!

  24. I volunteered at a place that gave food and clothes.
It was quite disheartening when you would see a family come in for their food for the month... 3 generations getting their share with a child along with them that you just knew they would be coming in soon for their share as they aren't going to be taught any other way of life. And then the people that would come in for the best clothes they could find to sell at a rummage sale, what can you do? These people are the ones you would see at other facilities getting whatever stuff they could.
Don't get me wrong... there was a small percentage of people that were there just to get back on their feet, not to live off the rest of their lives. One guy just got out of jail and had a job at a hotel but needed some stuff till he got his first paycheck. There were plenty of abused women that were getting away from that life finally! Those people touched my heart.
The system in America is quite abused and needs to be fixed before more money is given. I think the whole family should have to take drug tests before they get their hand out. There should be a time limit of how long a person can be on it. And there should be a few mandatory classes while accepting it to help that person succeed. A family also should perform community services like picking up trash, mowing, washing down signs, etc... for their checks.
The system needs fixed! The government caring for the poor is biblical... but teach them to fish, don't just hand out the fish.

  25. How many people on here are getting that tax cut on there check, how many people on here has accepted each stimulus payment sent out by the government?
Did ya know that tax cut is/did you no good when the irs countered it by changing the tax tables for next tax year? I really hope that no one ranting about government handouts didn't accept the stimulus payment.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sorry to burst your bubble, I've never got back more than I've paid in!! So no, I didn't accept a stimulus, I accepted some of my own money back -- much less than I paid in that year!

  27. I never said that poor people were lazy. You are putting words in my mouth. I said lazy people do not deserve to get handouts from the rich against their will. I know plenty of people who work honorable hard jobs and still fall below the poverty line. They are not the ones i speak of. I speak of the lazy good for nothing welfare moochers who sit on their couch and watch Oprah, smoke their expensive cigarettes, always seem to have money for booze, but refuse to go out and get a job even though they are physically able. You all know people like that I'm sure.

  28. Yeah. They are the Democrat's voting base!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, it's quite alright when the big guys get nice cushy tax cuts. Thats the republican voting base.

A first time home buyer doesn't always have understanding of how bad a variable interest rate can cause a big headache. Seems like some think it must be ok with the interest rates skyrocketing and causing the housing crisis. It should of been stopped and you people know it.

If the country is in debt, then that stimulus money was never yours to begin with.

  30. It's always the rich people's fault that the poor don't understand that they are going to have to live up to the terms of the contract they are signing?

PLEEZE! If you are too damn stupid not to sign a contract without reading it first, or buy a house that you KNOW you can't afford, then you don't deserve help from the smart people.
