The town of painted burros

This is one of several painted burros in Carrizozo, New Mexico.
We - well mostly Joyce - were fascinated by these painted animals and the small town. They were all over the place, and we found out it is part of what is called the Burro Serenade.
The burros are painted by local artists, and then auctioned for local charities and other civic causes. The winners of the auctions put the burros around town, maybe at their home or their business.
It makes the town look really cool.
I have a more in depth story and more photos on the web site. www.arkcityrevived.com
This gave us some ideas. Anyone else have any ideas?
This is a very remote town of about 1,000 people.

  1. Were there any meatpacking plants or skateboarders in that town?

This would be a great thing for AC, but I would worry that whatever we chose to use to decorate would be vandalized or stolen. I know it may not be the most PC thing to say, both groups have good people among them, but for being such a small percent of the population they sure cause a lot of problems.

  2. Vandalism and theft are a concern.
My wife takes care of the flower garden at the library. She seriously considered quitting after it suffered so much vandalism last year.
    It is a hard choice.
I dont think the answer is to just not have anything so you don't take the risk.
Anyone have any thoughts on that?

  3. Dallas had a similar project called Pegasus Project: Dallas Soars! Local businesses and/or community leaders purchased statues which were then painted by local artists and displayed throughout the city. The money raised went to support local charities.

I really like this idea for AC. I think if you energized kids to get involved in the project so they could create their own piece they would be less likely to vandalize others.

  4. You could have saved a lot of maney and just visited the local maternity wards. There are a lot of "New Mexicans" there.

  7. They also do that in Chicago where artists decorate bulls and they have then all over town too. It would be great to get something like that going here in AC. Maybe they could take off from the Prairie Fest theme and do coyotes.

  8. I think K.C. did cows? Didn't someone in the area decorate one for K.C. Seems like it was a few years ago. Personally, I like the Chick-filet
cows and especailly the ones that were on the billboards. Maybe different animated/decorated figures. Maybe even a wooden Indian.

  9. Why are you promoting the Mexican culture? You need to promote the culture of the almight Christian White Man.

  10. It all comes back to AC's identity crisis. We do not know who we are or what we represent. What makes this town special? Whatever kind of statues you put in the town need to symbolize the "theme" of our town and we have nothing.

Where has AC been and what direction do we want it to go? Some have suggested music, some the casino's and others point out the rivers. I'm still not sure!

"Between two rivers?" Might be the best, so far. My step-brother just caught a 44 pound flat head on the Walnut last week. I think that's pretty spectacular and would catch outsider's attention???? Should we get some fish statues?

  11. Can we make statues of holes with poop in them? That is what Ark City is becoming.

  12. “Holes with poop in them” interesting. That would an A-hole, and that would be you! Go away, we don’t need any more of them every one already has one and they stink, yours may be a play thing it’s not for me to judge.
